Something happened today that made me feel great -- to know that in spite of the challenges, and HELL! -- the utter wackiness -- of our times, there still is a flame of goodness and sanity burning in the hearts of our fellow Americans.
I was in a supermarket in a Pittsburgh suburb that grew up, (or died around) an old mill town. A used-to-be-working-class neighborhood.
A mother was shopping with her two children. In the produce section, her little boy, I'd guess around 7 or 8, said "Mommy -- do you know anything about Martin Luther King?"
(She was kind of distracted and not paying him attention.)
"Mommy -- we've been learning all about him in school. I just think he is such a great man! He did great things! I think his name should be Martin Luther COOL!"
Sad to say -- his Mummy was none too interested in this kid, but I wanted to give him a big hug and tell him how happy I was to meet an enlightened soul, and that he made me feel better about the future of America. I just gave him a big smile and nodded my head.
In all these days of turmoil and struggle, hearing this little boy's testimony to moral courage buoyed me up and will be one of the things that keeps me going, because it's all worth the effort.
Hugs and kisses to all here, too.
