Magellan gin - anyone else discover this gin? (Booze thread - join in!)
Edited on Sat Feb-07-04 07:00 PM by Rabrrrrrr
Today I saw it for the first time, so I picked up a bottle. The gin is actually blue (a very light blue, the color of compressed ice in glaciers, but the compressed ice closer to the outer surface, not that incredible deep topaz that one gets in the center of the glacier), fruity, but not so much as, say, Plymouth or Holland Gin, and is missing some of the sharpness I like that one gets from Bombay or Boodles or Citadelle. Has a dry afterfinish that, while it doesn't say to me "never drink this again", doesn't say to me, "Hey - go get a case!"

Lighter, though still plenty robust in taste, than the main gins, especially Tanqueray (which I really like, but it does have a heavy, almost oily, taste) except perhaps Beefeater. Maybe on a par with Beefeater.

It's also much more expensive than Bombay. A true boutique gin, I guess.

Overall, I quite like it. A nice diversion from the usual, but, judging based only on 5 sips, not something that will lead me away from Bombay full-time, but, unlike Plymouth, something I'm willing to keep in stock along with the Bombay.

NB: when I say Bombay, I'm talking regular and Sapphire. And I have to say, I was always disappointed that Sapphire isn't actually blue. This gin is. But now that I see a blue gin, it makes me think, looking at it, that it's one of those sickly, sweetish yuppie drinks.

2. I've never been a big fan of gin.
I am fond Johnny Walker Blue, though.

3. Give me single malts
But at least Johnny Walker, in the high end, is quite good!

J&B can out of business.

And kickin' one last time! if a booze thread still dies, I'll know DU is done as an interesting forum.

10. I'm so pleased with myself for finding a bottle for $140 a few years back
Had to go out in a snowstorm to get it...! Johnnie Walker Blue, that is.

Hey, we have a cool johnnie walker event coming up in the DC area in a couple of weeks. Can't wait! Scotch tasting and lecture, plus they send you home with a couple of bottles (and give you good scotch cocktails while you're there)

11. I belong to a single malt club that meets once a month.
A couple of times a year we have special tastings. The Johnny Walker tasting last year was great. We got to taste both the blue and the yellow. My favorite special tasting night was in December we had the Glenmorangie rep come and we got to taste everything, even the 1977 vintage.

Please tell me more about the event coming up and how come you even get to take home bottles?

4. Is it better than Bombay Sapphire?
That's what's in my cupboard. I really love G&Ts. Yes, know what you mean about Bombay not being actually blue. I was disappointed when I learned it was only the bottle that's blue. LOL!

5. read the whole review

No, it isn't. Sapphire is still one of the tops IMO.

Though I'd never use it (sapphire) in a G&T. Cheaper gin is just fine for that. The subtly of the Sapphire is lost, IMO, in a G&T.

You can use something that's akin to rail gin, or a step above, in a G&T. And my Oh My, those are refreshing, aren't they? I love 'em on a hot day.

though I bet this Magellan wold be tasty in a G&T - VERY tasty.

6. Are you drinking it all by itself, like a martini or....
Edited on Sat Feb-07-04 09:13 PM by bubblesby2002
are you mixing it. I loooove gin martinis with many olives. One of my favourite drinks. It's also good with tonic too.

7. Would It Make A Decent Martini?
It would have to be pretty good to get me away from Sapphire.....

9. Actually the way you wrote the review
I can almost taste it. Sapphire is my favourite gin, I don't think Magellan or Plymouth are available here in BC. All this liquor talk - a hot spiced rum toddy sounds good to me right now.

12. I'd be willing to try it once...
I am the king of Bombay Sapphire, I believe it is the true nectar. but, I'll be on the lookout for this. I always like to try something new, but my blue bottle shall never be replaced!

13. I'm partial to Plymouth and Boodles Gin...
Simply because Travis McGee, my alter ego hero, drank it.
