Why some of the "L Word" is bs....
Hey, I'm a male and love female nudity, but what really blew it for me on this series is how the supposed most liberal lesbian activist seemed ignorant of how the military deals with gays.

The one character who was supposedly the most informed person about lesbian issues started an affair with a lesbian soldier and then took it upon herself to go visit the soldier on a military base.

Come on. This is pure bullshit.

3. One character...
portrayed as the most well renowned expert on cultural affairs starts an affair with a military soldier and as the fling goes one, takes it upon herself to drive to the soldiers base while seemingly oblivious to the military culture of "don't ask, don't tell" and then seems to be surprised when the military member is faced with reprisals for having a questionable relationship with the same sex.

It's just an unbelievable part in this series.

2. Maybe they wanted to make a political point, and had to bring that in somehow.

Just guessing, I don't even own a TV, let alone get cable.

4. Ok, fair point.
But that's not bad if the worst thing you can say about the show is this weak plot point.

5. what I find interesting...
my husband is military and works with soldiers that are lesbians. Has worked with quite a few that are open about it in the last 3 years, actually. It isn't any secret that these soldiers are lesbians and one even took leave and "married" another soldier. (Quotes because, of course, it isn't a legal marriage and the army doesn't recognize that marriage)

I'm not saying that it is safe for lesbian soldiers to be open about it in the military as a whole, but the units my husband has been in the last few years it is pretty safe.

6. I've heard from several people in different branches
that "don't ask, don't tell" isn't enforced any more. They're desperate for soldiers and its too easy to get out of the service that way. They have no choice but to ignore the policy much in the same way they would if there was a draft.

7. I haven't heard about any
openly gay male soldiers but I imagine it would be a lot tougher on them than on lesbian soldiers.

My husband was telling me that recently there was a meeting of some sort (I don't pay much attention to what these things are called!) with all the soldiers in the unit and someone asked for a show of hands -- who would not want to serve alongside/be in a foxhole with a gay soldier. He said very few people raised their hands and most of the soldiers said they didn't care as long as the guy could shoot.

8. I imagine that with actual fighting going on
And a real possibility of death, that would be the prevelant view, except maybe for the hardcore fundies.
