The latest phrase being beaten to death - "Having said that..." or "That said,..."

What a ridiculous phrase, right up there with "if you will...". Well, what if I *won't*?

Dan Abrams does this all the time.
He makes a statement, then says, "That being said...".

Well, if I'm listening to you, I already KNOW that that was said.

It's like saying, "Now that I got the PC thing out of the way, lemme tell you how I really feel."

Does this annoy anyone else?

20. Depends on context

If one uses "Having said that" or something simply as a sort of link to what they'll say next, then it's superfluous. But, some such device is often needed to signal a shift in point. For example:

The Dodgers, statistically, have the third-best pitching staff in the National League. Be that as it may, it's rare for them to win more than three or four games in a row.

Usually, though, "however" or even "but" work just as well, and they're much more economical.

She used to complain about hearing Roy Turner, former head coach of the former indoor soccer team the Wichita Wings, say "Having said that" CONSTANTLY. She died 21 years ago tomorrow. Thanks, Roy!

(she really died of colon cancer, but man, she HATED hearing that phrase!)
