One of my rescue pups could REALLY use some Lounge vibes today.
One of our rescues that we've had for a long time was very lethargic this morning. Gums were almost white. So, e-mail work, and I'm off to the vet. Bloodwork. Could barely pull enough for a test. That's when the vet found it.

A squeeze on her belly determined that there was a very large mass. The xrays show that it is with the highest probability that this is a malignant tumor. If it is, and it is only affecting the spleen, the spleen will be removed and we'll be very happy. It could also be that the spleen has torsioned and that's the mass we're seeing. That could be repaired. The vet said it's unlikely.

They will do surgery tonight to determine the exact problem and the extent of the damage inside. If it is malignant and has spread to the liver or elsewhere, she won't be brought out of anesthesia.

And I will have put down my third dog in 7 months.

So if you would, she could really use them.

Sometimes splenetic tumors can adhere to the liver, and even if it has penetrated, they may be able to do a resection. Be aware..sometimes splenetic tumors come back..yes without the spleen present. Our dog had two, first weighed 5-lbs..18 months-2 yrs later, he had a 2nd one. It was 10-lbs and as big as a basketball. His 2nd one ended up being adhered to the liver but they were prepared to resect if needed.

Wishing the best for her and you.

26. My first dog, a wonderful cocker named Lucie, had cancer of the spleen.
I'm sorry to hear that it might be this. But already it sounds like things are going better than it did for her. She died the day she was diagnosed with it. It seems like it progressed really quickly. She lost her appetite and seemed tired, so I took her to the vet. He found the mass, told me what it was and sent her home to await tests the next day. She died in her sleep that afternoon.

I'm sorry to share that, but again, it sounds like you're already further ahead of the game than I ever was. I hope it's treatable. I'll keep you in my prayers.

I will be thinking good thoughts for her. You are my favorite dog person here on D.U. & it isn't right to have to say goodbye to two dogs in such a short time. Having to say goodbye to three would be awful.

I am glad she is in your care, she couldn't be in better hands.

Edited on Fri Jan-25-08 06:45 PM by flvegan
First, thank you everyone for your kind thoughts, wishes and vibes for my sick dog.

She's on her way now to the e-clinic. She was doing much better than this morning, but a good fluid drip will do that to you. Her prognosis is still as bad as it was earlier, and the common opinion is that she's likely to be put down this evening.

For that reason, 20 minutes ago, I officially adopted her as my own dog from my rescue. If she dies tonight, she dies not as a rescue, but as someone's beloved dog. Which is what she always really was.

edit: spelling

57. When we rescued her
her name in the neighborhood was "mama" because she was constantly churning out litter to be sold to...well, to do not so kind things I don't think.

She's mine if she does pull through. With these problems, she's not really a dog I'd adopt to a family looking for a good companion animal without problems.

Our dogs come with a kind of CarFax. We don't hide anything at all.

59. Sweet Mama.
I hope she pulls through so you can have some good times together.

We have our own "Momma" - "MommaKitty"; she brought us her babies and we kept them all, including Momma (I had intended to adopt out the kittens, but found I couldn't).

I have never understood why people lie about their animals - I'd think they'd want to find the best homes possible, but then again, so many humans just are not humane.

the decision. But three dogs in seven months! That is so sad... just read your update. You are a very thoughtful and kind person to adopt her in this situation.

Years ago, when I lived in Miami in the early 1960s, my pet Boston Terrier, Dolly (Duchess of Dade), developed breast cancer. She had an operation, and we brought her back home. For a week, she just lay there in the sunlight, with her belly exposed, and looking at me with her sad eyes.

Dolly and I had come a long way since we bought her from Al Schindler 12 years before. She had borne seven male puppies, and then we completed her CD (Companion Dog) course in obedience.

I couldn't let her suffer any more. Dad and I drove her back to the vet hospital and she was put down. Later, I threw her collar and leash into Biscayne Bay, with tears in my eyes. I was hurt and angry. But she had lived a good life and I didn't know it then, but other dogs awaited my care later in life...

In peace,

Radio Lady in Oregon
