have any of you ever stayed in the cabins at hanging rock state park? how good are they? and more importantly, poisonous snakes-how bad a problem is it?

1. I haven't stayed in a cabin there since the 70s but I like the park in general

It's not exactly wilderness. You'll almost always be within a couple miles of a road. The park is surrounded by farms and close to medium sized cities.

However, the trails are quite nice.

There are snakes in the park but I don't think they bother humans too often. The only problem I remember was a few years ago when several rattlesnakes made nests in a cliff-side that's popular with climbers. I've been up there at least 50 times and the only snake I've seen was a baby rattler.

2. we are trying to find someplace we have never been

for a relatively inexpensive week. this may be it.

3. If you're gonna spend a week in NC I'd recommend the mountains or the coast

I'm honestly not sure there's a week's worth of stuff to do at Hanging Rock, but that might be just me.

4. Stay away from Balsam Mountain. when they say "bears" they are not kidding
