29. I remember the first time I shot a .45 automatic
first shot went off level.

Next shot, 30 degress above the horizon.

Next at 60, and the next straight up.

That's the point when the instructor grabbed the gun out of my hand.

Edited on Mon Feb-11-08 08:55 PM by Lautremont
We were fourteen and later, post-adrenaline, realized how close we'd come to killing ourselves. (One bullet ricocheted back towards us.) This goes some way towards explaining my feelings towards guns today, which is not a charitable feeling.

Edited to add: yes, if we'd died it would have been our fault, not the poor innocent gun's. Doesn't matter much to me.

Did .22 rifle target shooting a lot as a teen.

Shot Clay Pigeons with my great grandfather's 10 guage pump goose gun. Damn heavy, rediculously long barrel.

Shot handguns a bit out in the woods. Mostly .38's.

Been many years since...

41. I have.
I dated a guy for several years who was in the Coast Guard, and whose family lived in a relatively rural area where they'd been for more than a century. They had lots of guns. I got to shoot a lot of rifles and a few pistols. I was relatively good for having no previous experience. I don't own any guns of my own, but I'm glad to have had that small amount of training, where I now feel like I can safely handle a gun, and have some idea of how to load and shoot one.

116. Lucky you.
Edited on Tue Feb-12-08 09:43 PM by Mugu
I have never been able to afford a complete set of anything worth having. However, in the unique and strange category I have a few. One of the strangest is a CO2 powered 28ga.shotgun. It looks like an over/under but the bottom tube is for bulk CO2 storage. I'm unable to find the instruction manual now, but if I remember correctly, it advised using shot for fowl and small mammals, crossbow bolts for mid-sized game, and TNT torpedoes for very large game. Never found out where to obtain the TNT units, but I can only imagine how much fun they would be.

Another odd one is a revolver that started life as a .38 Special. The original barrel was replaced with a .177 barrel. Brass cartridges of .38 size were machined with an air valve replacing the primer. You use a hand pump to charge the cartridges with air and then placed a .177 pellet in it. The cartridge is then loaded in the swing-out six shot cylinder and fired like any double-action revolver .

Regards, Mugu

Edit: spelling

in a sand pit with my husband shooting at targets. When we moved in together he came with his guns and we decided that if we were going to have them in the house, I had better learn how to use them. I'm not a very good shot, but they're shot guns, so if something is close enough, I can hit it.

65. Just last summer, for the first time. It was a hi-powered military issue rifle
we shot at a special target thingie out on my cousin's 220 acre farm.

Another cousin works for the DEA and also is a firearms instructor, so he brought along a gun to our family reunion, in case anyone was interested in doing some target practice, in a totally safe and protected environment.

I'd never shot a gun before and probably never will again, so I thought, "What better time?"

It was weird, though, and I can't say that I liked it.

Don't worry, we all get along really well. :D I realize it sounds a bit odd having hi powered weaponry at a family reunion.

66. Yes, and I have even killed something, unfortunately
It was a snake, a cottonmouth, and I am sad to say I would do it again.

My dad owned a number of guns, and he thought we should be taught about guns, how to shoot them and the dangers and responsibilities of the weapons. I found it was much like everything else, my brother and I seemed to experiment less with weapons (or "toys" like firecrackers, stinkbombs and the like) than other kids in our area just because we had been taught about them. Kind of how my parents taught us about drugs, alcohol and sex, rather than ignoring those kinds of issues as too many parents do.

My cousin used to take me out target shooting when I was a kid, and I'm so old that my high school had a rifle team. We had a shooting range under the school. The rifle team would bring their guns to school on match day - nobody was worried about it.

I used to try out for the team every year, just for fun. I almost made it one year.

78. My dad and I used to occasionally target shoot in the basement! (1960s)
He had this bullet-trapping heavy metal target holder and he'd sometimes let me fire off a few rounds at it.

This may seem amazing but here's another one from the 60s. My dad was a personnel director for a cement company and occasionally had to give speeches at business conferences. One time he took his pistol with him (!) and began his speech by saying, "If anyone disagrees with my points, I would be happy to listen to their objections," taking out the pistol as he spoke, ostentatiously "cocking" it, and laying it on the podium. It got a huge laugh and his speech was a big success. Somehow I don't think that joke would work today.

(Context: No NRA or gun nuttery at our house, Dad had the gun from his Navy days somehow. He rarely took it out and the whole thing was a very tiny part of my childhood. Nobody gave it a thought. Things were calmer then.)

81. There *was* a gun incident in my neighborhood, however.
In the opinion of psychiatrist Charles A. deLeon, any adult who murders another person's child, except in connection with a kidnapping or acts of sexual perversion, must be psychotic. Dr. deLeon expressed this conclusion as an expert witness for the defense in the 1966 trial of housewife Mariann K. Colby for the apparently motiveless killing of a neighbor's eight-year-old son, John Cremer Young Jr., in Shaker Heights, Ohio, an eastern suburb of Cleveland.

Mrs. Colby had moved to the Cleveland area in 1952 with her husband Robert, a space engineer. Soon after their arrival, Mariann, then 27, formed a compulsive and unrequited attachment to an unmarried man.

More at http://tarlton.law.utexas.edu/lpop/etext/lsf/29-2/murderoftheboy.html

The Colbys lived on the next street over, right behind our house, when I was a teenager. The husband, Robert, was a ham radio operator (K8CEZ) as was I (then K8YSO) and he often had me over to use his fancy voice-enabled rig (I was using Morse code only). One time we had a rat in our house and Mr. Colby brought his rifle over and shot it for us.

Then all of a sudden the incident described in the article occurred. I never saw Mr. Colby again.

80. I have used a rifle and a pistol
This was years ago.

I used a rifle at at setup the National Guard had at the State fair I think I was about 8 or 9 at the time. I was completely uninterested but my family was somehow adamant that I try it. And I was completely flummoxed why they were so het up about me doing it. I was very nervous, annoyed and overly stimulated. Hated it completely. Had to lie down, and shoot at a paper target with several other kids. It was kind of a mini contest to see who could shoot the target the best. I missed the target completely out of 8 or 10 tries (probably) and only shot the edge of the paper. LOL. I told my mother afterwards in very definite terms, to never ask me to do such a thing ever again. She didn't. It was the only time I said emphatically that I didn't want to do something they asked of me. They had crossed a boundary and they knew it! :D

The seond time, I used a beebee gun to shoot at a target out in the woods. That was fine. I could do that. But, I don't have anything to do with guns. I don't hate guns; I think hunting for food is fine. Guns just don't appeal to me.

I was fairly accurate with a M16. Pretty good with the old ass 45 I had. Great with a 9mm. and one of the best in Europe with a Bradley Fighting Vehicle (25MM and 7.62 Coax stripped down M60)

91. My grandfather was a gun nut
He had a large collection of guns and ammo that he kept for when "the A-rabs come". :eyes: Yeah, he was nut. When he died, my grandmother gave me a number of his rifles - a couple .22 tube loaders, and a 30-30.

I used to go target shooting with some friends fairly often. So I've also shot a number of handguns, including an Israeli made Desert Eagle, and some various caliber black powder guns. I still have one of the .22's, but haven't fired it in almost 20 years.

92. All summer as a kid on my grandma's farm -- an old .22 rifle
My sister and I would often spend much of the day lining up and shooting bottles.

We were city kids, but spent a few weeks' vacation on my grandma's farm in Virginia most summers.

The gun had originally belonged to an uncle, who died very young. He had ordered it by mail by saving up cupons from a soap company in the 1940s.

The gun is in my house now dismantled and unregistered. If I ever get the energy, I would like to figure out how to register it.

93. I shot daily for years and years.
My eyesight has gotten bad enough that's it's not much fun anymore. I personally know that a Browning Buckmark requires the recoil buffer to be replaced about every 37K rounds, having replaced mine twice. I have a Ruger MK-I that I'm sure has well over 100K through it.

My first centerfire handgun was a Ruger Blackhawk chambered in .357. It has been been retired for over 30 years, but has been shot so much that it rattles when you shake it.

My TC chambered in 30/30 Win. (have other TCs in other calibers, but always preferred the 30/30) has launched over a thousand rounds downrange. It won't group like it did when new, but with a stiff charge of IMR 4064 it will still spit 125gr Sierras into a minute.

My XP-100 chambered in .308 Win. is the only weapon that I own that after touching it off a few times, you can ask if anybody would like to shoot it and get very few offers. A bicycle glove and archery wrist protector helps to tame it, but it's still a handful.

I can't even begin to guess how many tons of .357, .44, .45 ACP & LC, 9mm, .223, .243, .308, 30/06, .338, and lead shot that I have scattered around the countryside.

In the Autumn months I still occasionally like to step outside and shoot walnuts out of the tree with a Feinwerkbau pistol.

Regards, Mugu

131. I'm a little surprised that somebody hasn't ask about the Feinwerkbau pistol.
It's one of the least known/most expensive handguns that I own ($1350 USD when I bought it fifteen years ago and $1888 today,) but the least powerful (it's an air gun.) I also have an Anschutz air rifle. By any standard, the trigger on either of these weapons is truly a work of art, adjustable in every way. Once set, you only need think to the trigger, and the projectile is launched. The guns are very expensive, but arguably the best buys that I ever made. They are machining works of art and with proper lubrication should last forever.

I set in my living room and watch television while shooting into a pellet trap in front of my fireplace (sometimes it makes my lady friend crazy, while other times she's the one shooting.) With enough light, even with my failing eyesight, I can light matches or split pellets on an axehead to pop two balloons with one shot.

If accuracy is what excites you...

Regards, Mugu

At some point, I've shot a 12-gauge pump and side-by-side, a .410-gauge side-by-side, a .30-06 semiauto, a 7mm Mauser bolt-action, a .30-06 bolt-action, a .270 Win bolt-action, a civvie AK-47, a .223 bolt-action, two 9mm autos, a .45 auto, a .45 Colt single-shot, two .22 revolvers, two .22 pistols, and two bolt-action, one semiauto, and one lever-action .22 rifle.

I think that covers it. Some of those were 'loaners', and a couple were either rentals at a range or "hey, want to try it out?" offers from other shooters.

A brick of .22 ammo $11
Range fee: $2
A refill of my ginormous 64-oz soda mug: $0.89

Three hours of blasting the shit out of clay pigeons, expired canned goods, rotten apples, old milk jugs, and the occasional expired piece of electronics? Priceless!

And with tht .223 bolt I put four shots in 5/8th of an inch at 100 yards! Woot!

106. Lots
My dad was a target shooter and my husband is a hunter, so I've fired many different kinds of guns. My favorite is my husband's 50 caliber muzzle-loader, but his 10mm Glock would have to be the most memorable--big and loud!

Last year, all four of our kids (2 boys, 2 girls, ages 11-13 at the time) earned their Hunter Safety Certification. At the beginning of the class, the instructor said that anyone that scored a 100% on the final exam would get to fire a police sniper rifle or a submachine gun. My 13 year old daughter was the only 100%. Daddy was so proud and she really impressed the cops/instructors with her aim with the submachine gun (set to 3 shot blasts). She's still got the target hanging up in her room--nice deterrent for any teenage boy that might get ideas.

That was then... this is now.

I don't currently own any firearms, but Oktoberain and i aren't opposed to changing that in the future... it's just not a priority in our lives right now. We live inside the city, and rarely go anywhere that using one recreationally would be a possibility.

I joined a gun and target shooting club on campus because I've always wanted to familiarize myself with guns and I wanted to do so in a controlled setting where more experienced people would be around to instruct me and tell me how to do it right. Since then I've shot a few 9mm pistols, a .40 pistol, a .22 rifle, an AR-15, and an old WWII-era Russian-issue Mosin-Nagant M44 Carbine. One of these days I'll probably get one of my own - I had a lot of fun.

I recently gave both my black powder rifles to my neighbor because I have lost interest in that sort of thing.

125. Yes
I've blasted away with a shotgun, 357, a 22 and bb guns.
I've shot paper target things, pop cans, bottles and a barrel. Killed 'em all dead dead dead!

128. Shot tin cans on a fence with a rifle when I was 10 years old
It was great fun and I can see why people like it for sport. That is, if no living thing gets injured or killed.

129. Military
I was an 11-B and a 13-F in the Army, so I had plenty of opportunities.

I've fired an M-16, M-60 machine gun, M-249 Squad Automatic Weapon, M-203 Grenade Launcher, AK-47, Uzi, and some Yugoslavian sniper rifle that was the size of a small howitzer.

Oddly enough, I've never fired a pistol.

130. I have.
I took a marksmanship course in college. We started with pellet guns and finished by shooting M-16s at the local National Guard Armory. (The course was sponsored by the ROTC, so I was an ROTC candidate for one semester in order to take the marksmanship course.)

136. No handguns, but
I've shot plenty of rifles and shotguns. I grew up poor in West Virginia--hunting wasn't a "sport", it was a regular source of dinner. I shot every gun my Dad ever had, save for one--his mean old 12 gauge that he fondly referred to as "The Cannon". I saw the bruises that thing left on HIM, and never got quite brave enough to try it myself. ;) :hi:

139. Yes
My husband's 9 mm at a range. I decided it wasn't for me, since I closed my eyes (a reflex) every time I squeezed the trigger.

Although, who knows...maybe a hypothetical burglar would be *more* intimidated facing someone waving a loaded gun around with their eyes closed.

142. I shot a gun many times
My favorite time was when we launched beercans from this trebuchet like thing, and then shot them to shit with shotguns.

I'm all in favor of hunting flying beercans, clay pigeons and targets.
