OK, so where was Clinton in the 70s?

I have a RW acquaintance who claims Bill Clinton jumped the border to Canada to dodge the draft.

I seem to recall that Clinton was in England, at the University of Cambridge, studying, at the time.

Anybody have a link to back it up?

1. Don't have a link, but he was studying abroad at the time...

He registered, and drew a number that wasn't selected for service.

And you're right. He was a Rhodes scholar studying at Cambridge during part of that time. That alone is quite a contrast to "C Average George" as I like to call him.

IIRC, that's where he got into (later) trouble for his "loathe the military" comments. Foreign soil and all, dont'cha know - just like the Dixie Chicks.

Clinton was graduated from Georgetown University and in 1968 won a Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford University. He received a law degree from Yale University in 1973, and entered politics in Arkansas.

He was defeated in his campaign for Congress in Arkansas's Third District in 1974. The next year he married Hillary Rodham, a graduate of Wellesley College and Yale Law School.

He never went to Canada. He actively sought to avoid military service -- when he was running for president there was a huge flap over his initially trying to get into the National Guard and then backed out as soon as he got a lottery number high enough to keep him safe from the service. He was actually completely honest in one letter he wrote to someone about preserving his ability to run for public office in the future.

Bill Clinton received college deferments from the draft. Upon the exhaustion of said deferments, he registered for the draft but received a high number and was not called.

There's nothing in his story that suggests he was in Canada for an extended period.
