I LOVE that Jane Fonda said the C-word on TV
I just adore her, and the whole interview was awesome.

The discussion about New Orleans being the vagina of America was awesome.

She's put up with almost as much shit as Yoko Ono and has survived beautifully. She's now 70 - a brassy old broad now. I love it.

I met her last year, very briefly, and she was gorgeous and sweet and funny.

2. I loved that, too
It was like she was saying, "Fuck you. It's the name of the play. You want me to call it 'Vajayjay' or something? I'm not Oprah, ya pinheads."

6. But in the context of what she was talking about it was totally appropriate
It was the name of the monologue she was asked to read.

9. She didn't call anybody a cunt
It was the name of a piece she was asked to perform.

Context is everything.

11. well I think it's silly to hate words
You can hate how they're used, hate the context in which they're used, but hating the word itself is just weird to me.

12. I can think of several offensive words
that I don't believe should be said on tv. I find that word highly offensive and it sends shivers down my back to hear it, in any context. There are a few others that I wouldn't want someone I respected to say either. The fact that it is just a word doesn't negate the fact that it offensive to must woman.

13. And that is exactly the reason for that particular monologue.
It's about taking back a word used against us. Best line in the monologue: "Cuuuuuuuunnnnnnnnttttt!"

16. "sends shivers down my back to hear it, in any context"
I will never, ever understand that mindset.

And I don't know that most women do find it so unreasonably offensive, anymore. Times are changing. :)

19. Context.
Yes, unreasonably. If the word isn't used to insult anyone, why be offended? Cause of the letters? The sound? Past experiences?

We could all be so very offended by so many different things, if we tried hard enough.

24. I don't think that word means what you think it means.
Do some reading, and then come back and explain how your "context" made your use of it unoffensive.

28. So, I'm unreasonable and illogical to think
that a word used to downgrade a woman is offensive. I also think the n word is repulsive the f word for gays is disgusting, and I would assume a lot of them would agree as well. If you don't find them offensive by all means use them as you want. I for one will not allow them in my house. To be proud or happy a respected star said it on tv to me is illogical.

29. No, I didn't say you were unreasonable.
It is my opinion that finding words offensive, in and of themselves, is unreasonable.

I agree with those many, many people over the years who have said... words are words... only uses / context / intentions can be offensive.

40. but - just let go of the word and its ability to offend you
yes, it can be used as an insult, but if you keep acting/reacting as if it is, it will continue to harm you. Take the power out of the word. "Nigger" and "faggot" aren't nice words, either, and have been used to degrade and negate for decades if not centuries. But whenever I hear any of those words, I have to admit I think of Eleanor Roosevelt's famous statement, how no one can make you feel inferior without your permission.

No one can really insult you without you responding as if you were actually insulted. Take the word cunt, say it a bunch of times, use it in a few sentences, and the ability of the word to shock and offend goes away.

Words do have power, but only the power you give them.

45. "Offensive" words are often claimed by those who are the target of those words
Fag, faggot, fairy, dyke, all have been reclaimed by gay people, rendering them meaningless to those who would use them to attack us. That's why I don't have a problem with Jane using cunt, or it appearing in the Vagina Monologues.

31. I have a lot of acquaintances / friends from the UK.
I hear it *all* the time, and hardly ever as an insult against a woman (notable exception there from rug above, but oh well)...

It's a word. Uses are ugly. I have heard the word "woman" used in a very ugly way... but that doesn't mean the word "woman" is ugly... nor would it be ugly even if it was used that way commonly, in a culture full of idiots. It would still only be ugly when used in an ugly way by idiots.

25. well it was pretty obviously a planned publicity stunt
batting her eyes and saying, "hey, it was the name of the piece, i had no idea it was a swear if it's the name of the piece" is pretty hilarious, this was about as spontaneous as the famous superbowl wardrobe malfunction (complete with pasty over the nipple) that occurred some years back

i like fonda and like her brass ones but i don't know how many obviously manufactured news items i really need in one week

when you're 70 i guess you can't just leave off your underpants and get publicity tho
