Slobbering Newfoundland Named Top Dog

NEW YORK - Bounding around the ring as if he owned it, a slobbering, black Newfoundland named Josh licked the competition — along with many of his admirers — and won best in show at Westminster on Tuesday night.

"He enjoyed it," co-owner David Helming said.

So did the 15,000 fans at Madison Square Garden, and some of them shouted his name as judge Burton Yamada carefully studied a prize Norfolk terrier called Coco and all the final seven contenders.

Using his right hand to shield his eyes from the bright lights, Yamada contemplated his choices much longer than judges normally do. After about 25 minutes, he pointed to the popular crowd favorite.

5. That dawg has SOOO much spirit and personality! He just LOVED what

he was doing and being on parade and showing off! THAT is what sold that big boy as the best in show was HIS enthusiasm for the games!

He was just plain fun to watch, he so clearly lapped up ALLLLL the attention and demanded more!

4. I am weeping!

This is my Raven who died in October at age three. They are exceptional dogs...wonderful temperments and just the greatest faces. Raven was attached to me at the hip. She followed me everywhere. She had some white markings which would not have gone over well at the competition. She was very protective (if someone came to the door, she would plunk her big bod between me and the visitor) and when she shook her head the spit went everywhere! I loved that dog!

when Neruda was the Chilean ambassador to Spain, him and Federico would get together and share their literature.

Federico Garcia Lorca was also a magnificent composer. He is probably the best Spanish playwright and author of the 20th century.

Franco took away the life of Lorca at such a young age. There was so much potential. *sigh* He should have escaped with Picasso to Paris.

27. My neighbor has a dog very like this one

She is beautiful, with a wonderful temperament. As is often the case, the family who had her just didn't want her anymore, so my neighbor lucked out. She is probably show quality, but my neighbor just wants her as a companion. She is a widow and she takes her for long walks and just loves her. She was quite tickled that this dog was the winner. As for me, I wish that just one time they would pick a cocker spaniel.:shrug:

Where are the boxers??? Those are the best and most beautiful dogs around. I hate events that are subjective and some/most of the judging criteria is completely out of the hands of the competitors/trainers.

31. I agree! As I said, where are the cocker spaniels?!

They often choose terriers, but why not the Cairn Terrier, which I have had and he was certainly as cute and winning as those other terriers! They have three cocker spaniels, of different colors, and certainly one must make it to the finals! I have been watching the dog show for years and have yet to see it. You're right about boxers. I have yet to have seen them, as well. My neighbor is happy, since she has a Newfoundland much like this one, but the rest of us are frustrated.:shrug:

but I have a Pyrenees now.

With a solid black dog AND a solid white dog, nothing in my wardrobe would be safe!

I met a Newfie at a shop in Calgary in Inglewood being the store dog. He took up the ENTIRE floor! His name was Mowgli, and I was tempted to sweet talk him out the back door with me when the owner wasn't looking!

35. This is a beautiful dog, hands down

though I prefer the smaller ones. My breed is cocker spaniels, but I am currently the loving owner of a tiny Brussels Griffon and a terrier mix that melt my heart. They found me, as all my guys do. My neighbor has a Newfoundland, probably show quality, though she was rescue, and she just loves her to death. She has the greatest temperament and is extremely gentle. She has made me a fan. This dog deserved top honors.:-)

The only drawback, as I see it, is that these big dogs don't live as long as the smaller ones. They are old at 8, while I had my beloved cocker spaniel until he was 18.:shrug:
