3. They are gorgeous birds

They have the most amazing calls too. I remember the first time I heard one-it was amazing.
I have pics somewhere of a few that were nesting in a little wood near where I lived -I will post them here if I can find :hi:. As a (very) amateur photographer, that was one effort I was a little proud of :).

5. They are beautiful
I live next to a state park and see them flying overhead occasionally. They are also LOUD. I hear them more often than I see them.

6. I have one that keeps appearing in the backyard.
By the time I get the camera he does a Keyzer Sose and *poof* he's gone.

Awesome birds.

8. Why do they call them pileated?
pi·le·us (pī'lē-əs)
n., pl. -le·i (-lē-ī').
Botany. The umbrellalike fruiting structure forming the top of a stalked fleshy fungus, such as a mushroom; the cap.
A brimless round skullcap worn by ancient Romans.
See caul (sense 1).

They have neither a mushroom head nor a round skullcap.
Now this guy, I could see being called "pileated":

Whatever you call them, they're wonderful birds!
