Mountain lion

Some people a mile or so down the highway, our side of the road, well within a mountain lion's range, were sitting on their porch recently, their cat sunning on a ledge. A lion jumped on the porch, with them sitting there, and made away with the cat. I knew we had a lion who was bold - two neighbors have seen him/her in their yard in broad daylight - but didn't know s/he was that bold. I'm really nervous about Little White Dog now. He feels safe during the day going behind the shed to do his business. We can't see him there and it's the beginning of wild country. He will also go into the wash that starts behind the shed, not good. I much prefer for him to stay in the rock garden so I can watch him from the back porch, although if I saw a lion out there I don't know what I could do beyond yell and wet my pants. I've always thought Big Red Dog was big enough to be safe from coyotes, but certainly not lions. I had felt they were safe in the dog run at night, now I'm not so sure. As someone said when we moved out here, we had moved into their territory. And he was speaking of mice. Worry, worry.

1. Yea, if some of them eat people... Keep a close eye on your dog!

2. I think most pet owners will understand my concern.

And, yes, there's a danger for those of us who live in the eight houses on the road, but we're too remote, and the road is too strewn with boulders and gullies, to lure the stray jogger or biker. A neighbor who walks her dog with Mr. D and Big Red Dog has asked him to go armed.

3. I would be extremely worried. Dogs on their own have no real

defense against a mountain lion.

4. Poor kitteh! Here's it's the coyotes that are the threat. I would definitely

not let pets or kids run around without supervision. A couple of big dogs might be enough to deter a big cat, but I really am not sure. :(

but on a serious note, there was an article in my town paper saying to be careful with outdoor pets as it's coyote mating season

8. I don't have to worry about them so much where I live.

But I could see small dogs and cats looking yummy to a coyote. I sometimes worry about the hawks around here. But my littlest dog has gotten too fat, I think, for a hawk to even consider her.

See, living in the south does have its advantages!!
