I learned something about one of my Grandfather's cousins today

He cut off his trigger finger in the hopes that he wouldn't get drafted for WW2. Didn't work, they still took him.

2. Wow. You'd think that would either indicate mental instability or real opposition to the war?
A high school friend of my mother's got his draft papers. I guess he didn't want to go, because he went out in the garage and shot himself in the head. With a hunting rifle fired with his toes.

Seems to me that anybody that opposed should be able to get out of it and not just shifted to a non=combat role, because that's still helping to run the machinery of death. But he knew that as a boy from a modest neighborhood with no connections, no involvement in a traditional peace church, etc, he was about to embark on a taxpayer funded vacation to southeast asia, and apparently he really would rather die.
