I learned something interesting about myself last night
Around 1 o'clock in the morning my girlfriend woke me up from a sound sleep and said, "Did you lock the front door? I think I just heard someone in the living room".

Without taking time to think, granted I was still very much half asleep, I climbed out of bed and went to investigate.

Adrenaline kicked in hard and fast, and as I ventured into the darkness I felt oddly confident that if there were an intruder, I would just have to deal with it as best I could, even if it meant a physical confrontation.

Turns out the front door was locked, the apartment was secure. As soon as I had checked every closet and potential hiding place, i began to shake. It took a while before I was able to get back to sleep.

I woke up feeling pretty good tho. I think I feel oddly happy that I leapt into action, and didn't lie there afraid to move.

1. Next time grab a bat or something! That is scary though.
Good for you for being brave.

2. My bat was in the closet
So I grabbed this. I know it's kind of silly. But it was the heaviest thing around. I suppose I could have offered a massage.

4. You grabbed a microphone?
Why? So you could interview the intruder?

"Excuse me, Mr. Intruder, how do you feel about the impending ass-kicking that you are about to receive?"
And while he thinks about his answer, you bonk him on the head!

17. Or make the intruder happy.
"Is that a vibrator in your hand, or am I just really happy to see you?"

11. Well, it was a different sort of situation
I was hitchhiking across the country and got offered a ride by a truck driver. When I got in the truck, he had his girlfriend and another guy there and in the course of the next hour or so, I realized I was trapped with them and they were not going to let me leave. They were talking about where they were going which was the opposite of where he'd told me he was going and the other guy kept inching toward me and staring. When I finally said I had to go use the bathroom, the driver made me leave my pack and his girlfriend came along with me. It was creepy and I have no idea what their intentions were but I kept my head, went back to the truck and eventually managed to maneuver myself into the passenger's seat by the ploy of acting very dumb and asking a million questions. Then I said I wanted to comb my hair so I pulled my pack toward me, hit the door latch and bailed (we were still parked at the truck stop).

It was quite frightening in a lot of ways but also made me feel pretty good about myself because I felt like I handled it pretty well.

As a postscript, another trucker helped me find security who went looking for them and they had evidently taken off as soon as I bolted.

12. I'm glad you never found out what their intentions were
You probably wouldn't have been hitchhiking across the country by yourself if you didn't have a sense that you could handle yourself in difficult situations.

Did you initially think they might be okay because they had a girl with them? it seems like initially you thought they were okay, then begant to pick up clues.

13. I didn't even know about the girl at first
I'd gotten a lot of rides with truckers - this was in the 70's when they were more able to pick up hitchers - and all of them had been really great people. The guy was walking out of the truck stop and we struck up a conversation - he seemed similar to the guys I'd already ridden with. No bad vibes until I got into that truck and then it hit immediately.

I'm glad I never found out, too. :scared:

9. No, not thirty, but I noticed after my 2nd cup of coffee today
I felt more jittery than usual, so maybe it's not totally out of my system yet. Drinking big bottle of water now.

18. I remember waking up one night, running to the living room shouting "GET OUT OF MY HOUSE!!!!"
I was sure I heard someone opening the front door, and ran out without any forethought at all - instant adrenaline.

After I realized that no one had come in, I thought to myself, "Jesus, that was really fucking dumb."

But then, maybe not - probably would have scared the shit out of anyone coming inside and they would have left without confrontation.

I'm glad you had no real intruder! It's a scary ass feeling thinking someone's come inside.
