Chicagoans...news about your airport (Meigs)

FAA grants AOPA demand for investigation into Meigs closure
Feb. 11 — AOPA's claim that the city of Chicago violated federal law and aviation regulations when it shut down Meigs Field last March has merit, says the FAA, and will be investigated. AOPA filed a formal complaint following the destruction of Meigs's runway on Mayor Richard M. Daley's order, claiming the city failed to provide adequate notice, as required by the FARs. The complaint will not result in the airport's reopening but can lead to the mayor and the city being punished for their actions.

"AOPA intends to push for the appropriate penalty to be imposed on the city," said AOPA President Phil Boyer. "Mayor Daley and any other state or local official who may want to follow Daley's lead must be made to understand they cannot unilaterally change the National Airspace System."

1. Best case scenario:
Daley gets 'punished' out of office, and Meigs remains closed down.

3. Is that what you hope happens
or are you saying that that's the best AOPA can hope for?

8. What is "it"?
Daley getting punished?
Meigs staying closed?
Both?

2. The Meigs Field closing was one of the most blatant
examples of unchecked power I've encountered. Mayor Daley just didn't care what anyone thought, he upped and closed the field in the middle of the night. No hearings, no pre-approval, nothing. Daley is gettting ripped from all angles recently. This is another chink in the armor. I used to be a big fan of his, but he's tiresome. This is a good thing IMHO.

4. On one hand, I'm glad that Meigs is closed.......
...on the other, it pisses me off dat Hizzoner, da Mare, (you know, dat Ritchie Daley kid) closed it down in the middle of the night without concern for the proper authorities.

I love my hometown, and the Daley's have done a lot to keep this town the gem that is it, but his act is getting old.

5. I heard he had some bulldozer rip it up in the middle of the night
Now that's the way to close an airport down. Just rip up the landing strip!

10. Not only did he rip it up in the middle of the night
He left several planes stranded unable to taxi out because the runways were torn up. We nice taxpayers of course were happy to pony up the big bucks for the rescue of the planes.

11. I thought that they all ended up flying out.
Most, if not all of them, used the taxiway to take off from.
