A good trucking song
A lonely road, crossed another cold state line
Miles away from those I love purpose hard to find
While I recall all the words you spoke to me
Can't help but wish that I was there
Back where I'd love to be, oh yeah

Dear God the only thing I ask of you is
to hold her when I'm not around,
when I'm much too far away
We all need that person who can be true to you
But I left her when I found her
And now I wish I'd stayed
’Cause I'm lonely and I'm tired
I'm missing you again oh no
Once again

There's nothing here for me on this barren road
There's no one here while the city sleeps
and all the shops are closed
Can't help but think of the times I've had with you
Pictures and some memories will have to help me through, oh yeah

Dear God the only thing I ask of you is
to hold her when I'm not around,
when I'm much too far away
We all need that person who can be true to you
I left her when I found her
And now I wish I'd stayed
’Cause I'm lonely and I'm tired
I'm missing you again oh no
Once again

Some search, never finding a way
Before long, they waste away
I found you, something told me to stay
I gave in, to selfish ways
And how I miss someone to hold
when hope begins to fade...

A lonely road, crossed another cold state line
Miles away from those I love purpose hard to find

Dear God the only thing I ask of you is
to hold her when I'm not around,
when I'm much too far away
We all need the person who can be true to you
I left her when I found her
And now I wish I'd stayed
’Cause I'm lonely and I'm tired
I'm missing you again oh no
Once again

"Dear God" by Avenged Sevenfold

The song even has a country feel to it with a steel guitar featured on the track which would appeal to a lot of truckers.

1. Willin'..... Little Feat!
I've been warped by the rain, driven by the snow
Drunk and dirty, don't you know, and I'm still...willin'.

And I was out on the road, late at night,
Seen my pretty Alice, in every headlight...Alice.
Dallas Alice.

And I've been from Tucson to Tucumcari,
Tahachapi to Tournapaw.
I've driven every kind of rig that's ever been made.
Driven the backroads so I wouldn't get weighed.

And if you give me...
Weed, whites and wine.
And you show me a sign.
I'll be willin', to be movin'

Kicked by the wind, dropped by the sleet,
Had my head stove in, but I'm still on my feet, and I'm still,
In a whole lot of trouble.

Smuggled some smokes, some folks from Mexico,
Baked by the sun, every time I go to Mexico
And I'm still...

And I've been from Tucson to Tucumcari,
Tahachapi to Tournapaw.
I've driven every kind of rig that's ever been made.
Driven the backroads so I wouldn't get weighed.

And if you give me...
Weed, whites and wine.
And you show me a sign.
I'll be willin', to be movin'

3. Not bad
But as for the drug references, truckers have been reduced to caffeine pills now days. You can't dock your rig without getting a drug test. And one dirty test means your trucking career is over.

And hopefully no one will reference the band that made "That diesel driving donut dunking Dan."

7. Here's another one for you. A true trucking classic
Edited on Sat Mar-08-08 01:07 PM by Droopy
Well, I pulled out of Pittsburgh
Rollin' down that Eastern Seaboard
I've got my diesel wound up
And she's running like never before
There's a speed zone ahead, all right
I don't see a cop in sight
Six days on the road and I'm gonna make it home tonight

I got me ten forward gears
And a Georgia overdrive
I'm taking little white pills
And my eyes are open wide
I just passed a 'Jimmy' and a 'White'
I've been passin' everything in sight
Six days on the road and I'm gonna make it home tonight

Well, it seems like a month
Since I kissed my baby good-bye
I could have a lot of women
But I'm not like some other guys
I could find one to hold me tight
But I could never make believe it's all right
Six days on the road and I'm gonna make it home tonight

I.C.C. is checking on down the line
Well, I'm a little overweight and my log book is way behind
But nothing bothers me tonight
I can dodge all the scales all right
Six days on the road and I'm gonna make it home tonight

Well my rig's a little old
But that don't mean she's slow
There's a flame from her stack
And that smoke's blowin' black as coal
My hometown's coming in sight
If you think I'm happy you're right
Six days on the road and I'm gonna make it home tonight
Six days on the road and I'm gonna make it home tonight

6. another one--Truck Stop Girl
Written by lowell george and bill payne

Tailights flickerin, as he pulled up to a truckstop
The same old crowd was hangin out again tonight
He said, fill up my tank while I go check my load
It feels like its shifting all around

He was the kind of man, do all he could
Above all he had integrity
But he was so young
And on a ten city run
In love with a truck stop girl

As he went inside, he was merrily greeted
By the girl with whom he was in love
She held out a glass and said, have another
This is the last time we can meet

With her hair piled up high and a look in her eye
That would turn any good mans blood to wine
All his eyes could see, well all his eyes could see
Was the stare from all those around him

He ran out to the lot, and climbed into his rig
And drove off without tightening down
It was a terrible thing, to see what remained
Of the rig that poor danny was in

And he was so young and on a ten city run
In love with a truck stop girl
But he was so young, and on a ten city run
In love with a truck stop girl

9. That's a sad one, but there's a lot of sadness out on the road sometimes
I've seen a few truck stop girls I could have fallen in love with, too, I think. :)

11. and one more--ANOTHER LONELY NIGHT
The moon comes up, he pulls his truck off the interstate
Into a truck stop lot, writes his log and puts the book away
Sitting inside sipping a beer, well he’s a million miles away
Staring into space he sees his children play and his woman’s sweet smiling face
He hears her whisper please baby stay

Looks like another lonely night
Just you and that empty place inside
You can wish you may with all your might
But it’s another lonely night

When the kids get fed and bathed and in bed she starts missing him
Sits in his easy chair ‘cause he’ll sit there when he’s home again
Wraps up in his sweater and closes her eyes, it’s so soft against her skin
So soft and strong and it’s been so long and his sweater smells just like him
It helps her to pretend

Looks like another lonely night
Just you and the emptiness inside
You can’t close your eyes and say goodnight
When it’s another lonely night

Another thousand miles of blacktop stretching clean out of sight
Two lonely ribbons of headlights and taillights
Winding through another lonely night

The waitress brings his change and says hey stranger I get off at ten
But he don’t listen, the one he’s missing’s home missing him

Looks like another lonely night
Just you and that empty place inside
Close your eyes and say goodnight
Looks like another lonely night
You can wish you may with all your might
But it’s another lonely night

14. That's a good one, too
And it expresses something that millions of truckers and their families have felt at some point in time. I work with a guy who's dad was a trucker as well. He said that he only saw him one weekend a month up until he was 15 years old. Man, that's got to be hard on a family.

8. My all time favorite trucking song is "Pinball Machine" by Lonnie Irving...
Edited on Sat Mar-08-08 01:04 PM by mitchum
"Singer/Songwriter Lonnie Irving's song "Pinball Machine" made the Top 100 Singles Chart in March of 1960 on the Starday label. The lyrics are the lament of a victim of an addiction to truck driving and pinball machines"

The song is an exquisite example of country music as the white man's blues

16. Found the lyrics...
but couldn't find an audiofile.
The only recording I have is on a trucking songs compilation tape with Dave Dudley, Red Sovine, CW McCall, etc...
The tape has a great cover shot of a young nubile wearing a halter top standing in front of a big rig. Yeah!

PINBALL MACHINE
Recorded by Lonnie Irving
Words and music by Lonnie Irving

SPOKEN:

This story's about an ex-truck driver
Bein' named John James Wall
Before his friends blackballed him and nick-named him pinball
I gathered this story from a truck stop in Gallipolis, Ohio
When this old fellar, I'd say, 70 years old
Asked me to buy him a strong cup of coffee
And a piece of good apple pie
I bought the coffee and the pie for the old fellow
And I'm awful glad I did
Because he winked his eye and smiled and said "My!, My!"
Then I noticed in a few minutes, with trembling hands
He pushed a part of his pie and coffee back
And looked at me with tears running down his poor old
Weather beaten cheeks, and this is what he said...

I'm an old hog-hauler, I drove a big truck
I shot the pinball machine, but it caused me bad luck.

Put all I ever made in a pinball machine
I'd get four catty-corners, then I'd miss the 16.

I wish they'd outlaw them old pinball machines
Many weeks they have caused me to live on sardines.

Last time I called my wife on the phone
The first thing she says, "John, when can you come home?"

"I got a load of hogs and they've got to go
I'll see you when I get back from Chicago."

She says, "John, you know I love you, I wish you wouldn't go
Send your babies some money, they are hungry and cold."

The last thing she said and then she hung up
"John, you give up my lovin', just to drive an old truck."

I made my trip on to Chicago
I was gone two months, 'cause I shot up my dough.

When I got home my family was gone
The best friend I had, rung my telephone.

He said, "John, I guess you wonder about your babies and wife?
Pneumonia got your babies and your wife took her life!"

I lost all my friends, I can't sleep for bad dreams
I dream about an old truck and a pinball machine.

SPOKEN:
I never will forget the last words that old man said
"Oh! Lord, if I could live my life over!" and then he fell dead.

They tell me John was a clean cut man at the age of 19
But now he's in his grave ...
A victim of a big old truck, and a pinball machine.

17. Thanks for looking up the lyrics.
Never heard that one before and it does bring to mind how some truckers, in a desperate search for entertainment, will shove dollar bill after dollar bill into a video game.

18. How about "Papa Loved Mama"

Papa drove a truck nearly all his life
You know it drove mama crazy being a trucker's wife
The part she couldn't handle was the being alone
I guess she needed more to hold than just a telephone
Papa called Mama each and every night
Just to ask her how she was and if us kids were alright
Mama would wait for that call to come in
When Daddy'd hang up she was gone again

Mama was a looker
Lord, how she shined
Papa was a good'n
But the jealous kind
Papa loved Mama
Mama loved men
Mama's in the graveyard
Papa's in the pen

Well it was bound to happen and one night it did
Papa came home and it was just us kids
He had a dozen roses and a bottle of wine
If he was lookin' to surprise us he was doin' fine
I heard him cry for Mama up and own the hall
Then I heard a bottle break against the bedroom wall
That old diesel engine made an eerie sound
When Papa fired it up and headed into town

Well the picture in the paper showed the scene real well
Papa's rig was buried in the local motel
The desk clerk said he saw it all real clear
He never hit the brakes and he was shifting gears

Mama was a looker
Lord, how she shined
Papa was a good'n
But the jealous kind
Papa loved Mama
Mama loved men
Mama's in the graveyard
Papa's in the pen

Thanks for the winter pictures in your other thread.

19. Looking at the World through a Windshield
By Del Reeves, but Son Volt do a great version, too

Well when I was just a little bitty kid
I remember one time Mommy said
Daddy sends you all his love, from 'Frisco Bay
Well I didn't understand till I was grown
Why my Daddy didn't spend a little time at home
Instead of running round the country that way

{Chorus}
Oh I'm looking at the world through a windshield
Seeing everything in a little bit different light

I got a sweet little thing that I'm dying to see in Nashville
And I'm down around Dallas and rolling on south tonight

Well long strips of rubber that you see
Were burnt off of this rig by the likes of me
And they'll rot along the highways in this land
I'm gonna write my name in this diesel smoke
And let the ones that come along behind me choke
And try to keep this pace I'm setting anytime that they can

{Chorus}

Well I push this rig through the sleet and rain
And I've driven through the rough terrain
Of the rockies to the docks of old L.A.
On down that old pacific shore
I swing north and head for Baltimore
Or some place 'bout 2000 miles away

{Chorus}

22. Wrote by a friend of mine.
High desert westbound, sun's going down
Racing the clock to the next worn-out town
Never seems like it's been twenty years
But he knows better....

I'll wait for you here, she said
Don't ever forget that you love me
I long for the day when at last
We can be together again

Then the long lonely days blurred together
They ran into months, then years
He has a hard time remembering what happened
And squints his eyes to hold back salt tears

Stay here with me she said
I cry whenever you leave me
I know that the road now calls you
Leaving me is what you must do

This life and this truck have ruined him
He gave up his heart for the road
Every day he thinks of her waiting
But tomorrow there'll be another load

I can't wait for you forever
I don't want to hurt you, she wrote
And when he got home for the last time
All he had left were the words of her note

He trys not to think back too often
What might have been different for them
If only the road would stop calling
He could find his true love once again

This is story heard on every CB radio, and in every truck stop.

So I can bring it on home to you
So I can bring it on home to you

I know it's wrong to leave you so alone
I know it's wrong to be so far from home
I've just got to getcha this good job done
So I can bring it on home to you
So I can bring it on home to you

I'm gonna bring it on home to ya
Home to ya
