Does anybody else here NOT care about fashion or style?
Something must be wrong with me. I used to care. Even when I was poor - very poor - I would still try to keep up with fashion trends (related to clothes).

I don't look at the catalogs any more, I don't shop unless I am almost completely out of clothes with no holes in them, I don't really notice what people are wearing. I just do NOT care.

Maybe this is part of getting older. Shouldn't I care what I wear?

I think I'm having a reaction to my boss being fired... the boss that always tried to make me dress better.

*sigh*

1. I think most fashions and styles are completely and utterly stupid.
Except the ones I like. :P

A lot of them do, or did, seem stupid. I realized, tonight, I don't even know what is in fashion!

8. I don't pay attention to what's in fashion
and I discovered a particularly silly looking one (read: incredibly stupid looking) when I went back to school this semester for the first time in 3+ years. It involves girls taking their bangs and clipping it back in such a way that it creates this strange lump on the front of their head. It looks utterly ridiculous and stupid, and yet because it's in style, they'll continue to do it. A few years from now they'll look back at a picture of themselves and say, "Wow, I looked really stupid! I mean, my head doesn't even look like it belongs on a human because that silly fashion made me do something that made my head appear misshapen and gross." But for now... they'll keep doing it. Because it's in fashion.

41. Interesting question, KC2. Nordstrom's is showing a retro look and now my closet
is coming back into fashion! My clothing is largely from consignment or thrift stores -- and I never stopped wearing shoulder pads.

Polka dots
Big bright prints
Black is the new Black
Shorter skirts
Sandals or flat heeled shoes
Sneakers in interesting colors

I'll be 69 in May 2008. COMFORTABLE and CLEAN are what I like.

Peace,

RL

46. The other impact is that Portland, Oregon is a LOT more casual than any other place I've ever lived!
Most days, I wear a dress with a bright print or plain colored blazer over it. I usually have a couple of gold rings on my fingers, a watch and a bracelet, plus some interesting necklace.

Sandals with pantihose if it's cold, or just panties and no socks.

It's "my look" and people think it's dressy because everyone else is in jeans or hooded sweats or other stuff.

To me, blue jeans are for cleaning the dog kennels or riding horses. Comes from my youth when Florida was much more rustic.

They're still making them and they are sold in department and drug stores.

They do help with circulation and warmth.

16. Here's the conundrum
How you look matters.

It matters because marketing has said it matters.

Marketing is in business to keep you caught in that trap.

I have the luxury of not giving a damn how people see me, but most don't.

I hate style.

If I have a wardrobe theme it's "I stole these clothes from a colorblind bum."

Okay, not quite, but my wardrobe is kinda long on thrifted stuff, and I pretty much don't wear anything but blue jeans and black hoodies (fall-spring) or t shirts (summer) unless somebody's getting married or buried.

21. Strangely, I'm having the opposite reaction.
I spent the first 16 yrs or so since puberty either creating my own fashion, or just sticking with the basics: jeans, black shirts, skirts, and shoes; keds and white tshirts in the summer.
Now I'm actually starting to branch out into color and texture. It's a whole new world for me.
I always enjoy a classic look, however - I don't like to go too trendy no matter what. If I do get something 'trendy'; it's usually a small inexpensive acessory peice that I can easily switch out.
Also, I inherited some of my mother's jewelry, and everything old is new again. Love that.

I can understand where you are coming from, however. You are having style burn - out.

33. in my best miranda priestly...
This... stuff? Oh... ok. I see, you think this has nothing to do with you. You go to your closet and you select out, oh I don't know, that lumpy blue sweater, for instance, because you're trying to tell the world that you take yourself too seriously to care about what you put on your back. But what you don't know is that that sweater is not just blue, it's not turquoise, it's not lapis, it's actually cerulean. You're also blithely unaware of the fact that in 2002, Oscar de la Renta did a collection of cerulean gowns. And then I think it was Yves St. Laurent, wasn't it, who showed cerulean military jackets? And then cerulean quickly showed up in the collections of eight different designers. Then it filtered down through the department stores and then trickled on down into some tragic Casual Corner where you, no doubt, fished it out of some clearance bin. However, that blue represents millions of dollars and countless jobs and so it's sort of comical to me how you think that you've made a choice that exempts you from the fashion industry when, in fact, you're wearing the sweater that was selected for you by the people in this room. From a pile of stuff.

i don't agree with the thoughts, but i so loved the way meryl streep delivered those lines.

Carson Kressley would gasp in horror if he saw what was in my clothes closet.

68. Not in the sense of current fads, no; I prefer that which is classic and timeless.
I do, however, believe that dressing well - not a slob, for example - is important.

69. I like to look nice... that's it
it's too bad that the fashion industry hates women so much. There's really no way to look nice unless you fit their mold of what is considered beautiful. And you know, their mold is full of oxymorons.

71. I subscribe to the Gilda Radner philosophy of fashion.
"I base most of my fashion taste on what doesn't itch."

With the related schools of Gail Rubin Bereny and John Fairchild.

"Above all, remember that the most important thing you can take anywhere is not a Gucci bag or French-cut jeans; it's an open mind”

"'Style' is an expression of individualism mixed with charisma. Fashion is something that comes after style.”

72. There's a funny thing about fashion-- it's a contagious disease.
There's a funny thing about fashion-- it's an insidious and contagious disease.

There are those friends of mine who harp the loudest about being "individuals" and "never follow fashion", yet they're the same ones who get lost in the crowd of the new uniform-- tie died shirts, loose short, a bandanna, and sandals.

The very ones who complain about the monotony and dehumanizing attributes of the suits worn in corporate America, have themselves fallen victim to the very same, justifying it by re-defining it; it's not a "uniform" when these guys wear it-- it's a "statement of individuality", which is itself odd.

My (obtuse) point being, I think we all subscribe to fashion to one degree or another.

By the way, I hope your boss being dismissed is a good thing for you... :)

73. I like looking neat and presentable.
I am not a clothes hound but on the other hand, I don't wear clothing or shoes with holes or stains. I might wear an old or stained shirt around the house but not to go out.

74. I pay attention....
...but only on other people. For myself, it's been black or white tennies or black gig boots, blue or black jeans, and a black or white plain tee shirt for the last 20 years.

The one that currently get's me is the tendency for the young ladies to wear the fuzzy bordered hood, which kinda makes it look like their face is surrounded by pubes. It's like hair all around and then "Hey! Here's my face!"

Yikes...lol.

76. Me either.
I'm all about comfort, but don't look completely out of touch. My standbys are Chuck Taylors, high-heeled black boots, black pants, boot-cut Levi's, fitted T-shirts, and a couple of jackets. I'm very girly, but don't really wear dresses or skirts. It's a practicality thing - no formal parties or events for me. Just work, home, and errands.

77. Depends what you mean by caring about fashion or style...
There are looks I like and looks I don't, and I dress according to what I like. I don't put a lot of thought or effort into it. I like to think that what I wear looks pretty good on me though. I'm not about to wear something that I don't think would suit me.

I don't think it's fashion so much as being put together and contemporary.

81. Know so little about fashion that I have no ideas what "my colors" are
Think I look good in pink only because I get compliments when I wear it. I think a sense of fashion is something that is either there or it isn't. Case in point: our 19-year-old granddaughter has a terrific sense of fashion. When she was seven I wondered how I was going to find a new hairdresser (mine had retired). Seven-year-old told me to find someone whose hair style I liked and ask who cut it. Never would have thought to do that.

82. I totally agree.
I used to be into whatever was the latest trend, but now I couldn't care less. Jeans w/ a T or a tank top and sandals-and I'm happy.
I hate shopping. Seems like everything is geared towards tweeny size 2s.

83. This thread cracks me up.
It's turned into a "who's the biggest slob" match of one-upsmanship.

Believe it or not, it's quite possible to be nicely dressed and up-to-date without spending a ton of money or being obsessive about it. It means you need to have a basic idea of what flatters your body type (in both cut and color), and an eye for a bargain. I pick up a Lucky or InStyle about every other month to keep up with trends and get ideas for how to put outfits together (something Lucky is very good for, and at a cheaper price than other fashion mags). And I know where to shop (Target, Steve & Barry's, eBay, Santee Alley here in Los Angeles) to get the pieces I want. I have a very low clothes budget, do quite well on it, and manage to look nicely put together. It's not that difficult.

I enjoy looking pretty.

Looking attractive, and yet being a smart, strong and independant woman
are not two opposing values.

85. i don't ever buy anything trendy, i stick with what works for me, jeans, tshirts--usually black
unless it's spring and then i break out the grey ones. I like classic designs and the classics never go out of style. I like no i love shoes, if i need to go somewhere special and i need an outfit i start with the shoes, gotta have a good foundation or else it all falls apart.

90. Truthfully, my work doesn't require high fashion
so I never worry about fashion or style at all.

I am really hard on my clothes though, so I tend to buy high quality items rather than fashionable things that will last a long time so I don't have to shop that often. I hate shopping. I worry secondarily about how they look, or how I will look in my clothes. I will spend $100 on a pair of running shoes for work that are incredibly sturdy and I do NOT care how they look or what color they are. Same thing with boots, jeans, tee shirts etc. Most of my clothing DOES have holes, stains and tears which doesn't fuss me a bit, and I'll wear them until they fall apart.

I'll admit to being a Goodwill shopper where I've gotten a lot of excellent quality clothes (not stylish or fashionable) that wears like iron.

91. Not really into it - I mean, I don't go around looking like that chick
in the 80s mega-shoulder pads suit in the commercial for, what is it, TLC??
I shop almost exclusively at thrift stores (unless I need socks or undies; I refuse to buy those after they've been road-tested)
I suppose I manage to look presentable, and that's really all I care about.

92. I usually shop by catalog
However, it's not to keep up with the latest fads, but to replace worn out clothing. I'm small and petite, I know what the inseam and waist measurements will be, and I find certain catalogs that have clothes that will fit me well...and I really hate to shop. In many stores, the petite section is all teddy bear and flower prints. Ugh!

94. I really don't care...
I'm a nerd skater, my husband is a nerd, so I can wear whatever I like. I usually wear jeans or my scrub pants with a long-sleeved t-shirt or hockey jersey.

For my wedding, I wore a vintage 1967 Philadelphia Flyers hockey (home) jersey, so that pretty much sums up how I feel about fashion.

I guess you could say I'm a hockey loving version of Ugly Betty:

95. Its not that I so much care about trends....
but I do like to look nice when I go out or If I am at an important function. Some of the elements of the recent fashion trends are ok to me, but most are so beyond what I would wear that I just pick and choose what I like about it. The bottom line is if YOU dont feel comfortable in what you are in others will know that as well. Pick what you feel the most beautiful in and go with it. Trends are like gas prices, they change all the time. :)
