Delhi the Elephant has Died from infected feet caused by circus life

Delhi was our oldest elephant, captured in the wilds of India in 1947. Her entire captive life was spent traveling and performing with circuses.

Her most identifying characteristic was her speckled appearance. This natural depigmentaton increases with age and is as unique to each elephant as a person’s finger prints.

Delhi stood 8' tall and weighed 7100 pounds. She was a petite elephant but her pot belly gave her the appearance of being stocky. Her ears were large and feathery, with a trim of depigmentaton along the lower edge.

If you observed Delhi from the side you would notice that she had an unnatural stance. Instead of her legs placed directly underneath her body, her front legs extended forward and her back legs extended at an angle backwards. We have no explanation for this unnatural stance.

Wouldn't multiple doses of a homeopathic remedy be contrary to the tenets of homeopathy? I wish they'd given her real medicine.

So extinction is preferable to survival in zoos?
I don't like circuses. But zoos do serve a good function. There are alot of animals that would be extinct if not for zoos.
And most reputable zoos are going out of their way to make an good environment for their animals

9. The whole making animals do "tricks" mentality...

...is hideous. It's bad enough when we make our pets perform for us in exchange for food. But to anthropomorphize wild species into our playthings is wrong in more ways than I can count. It's as if we can't emphathize with anything that doesn't remind us of ourselves in some way.

The beauty and value of animals lies in their unique natures, not in how readily they can be molded into reflections of us.

Why people pay to see calves yanked off their feet, I'll never know. It's not "heritage" -- it's abuse.
