What Was The Last Live Stage Play (Or Musical) You Saw?
It's been a while for me... the last thing we saw was "A Tuna Christmas" at the Warner Theater in DC. Joe Sears and Jaston Williams are just brilliant!

It's even better when you know the guys who wrote it! :-) I used to see all of their musicals when they were called Cardiff Giant Theatre here in Chicago. Of course, that was before they moved to NYC and got all snooty! ;-)

50. i saw Urinetown 7 times! (but it wasn't the *last* show I saw)
my composing partner saw it more than 12 times and we were both in the audience for the FINAL performance a few weeks back.

LOVE that show.

(the couple behind us at that final show had seen in 29 times!)

52. You should have seen Aftertaste! (The Musical)
It was even more twisted and fun than Urinetown. I was somewhat disappointed to see that their sense of the absurd was toned down for national consumption. I guess I had visions of Greg and Mark's evil genius actually touring the country in it's original warped form.

Though in a way, it's kind of like John Water's film Hairspray, which he believes is his most subversive piece of work because most of the weirdness slips under the average person's radar, but it's still there, lurking under the surface. He felt that was much more subversive than having Divine eat poop. I don't know if he was right, but it's a perspective. :-)

53. i would LOVE to see/hear more of their work

and while I LOVED what they did with this production, I did sense that there was probably a darker and more dangerous vision behind it.

are there any other recordings?

p.s. my composing partner and I are going to the 'edge' next with a 'political' cabaret revue timed to run during the repub convention in NYC.

Edited on Sat Feb-14-04 12:12 PM by WyoMee
I saw a local production of Nuncrackers last Christmas -- funny, light, fun.

Last fall, I saw a terrific production of Pride and Prejudice at the Guthrie in Minneapolis.

Next month, I'm hoping to go to New York to see a friend in a new show called Ministry of Progress.

Can't wait for it! Opens next week, off Broadway. It's a rock musical (but not the typical kind that has really bad rock) that takes place in a Department of Motor Vehicles.

it is a review of songs. they say right up front that there is no crudity, just gratuitous nudity. :-)

but almost everything is extremely humorous. one song, about a lost lover to aids, is extremely sad.

it seems to be a big hit with bachelorette parties, the night before weddings. those ladies can be lots of fun.

as long as you don't mind seeing dick(s) (eight or nine), i would highly recommend it.

and they are excellent singers. ;-)

edited to add the wink

That was one of the funniest plays I've ever seen. It was in a local playhouse with local actors with fake British accents, but it was still super funny. The audience (75% elderly folks) roared. English farce at its best.

I've been to a half dozen in the last couple of years, but this one was the best, which had a lot to do with the hilarious story.

Edit: to add snip of a review I found (from another playhouse).

Dame Edna talking about her life, her son Kenny, poking light-hearted fun of the locals, serving an actual Italian dinner to two people chosen from the audience, and the signature gladioli tossing to her possums at the end of the show.

It was a very enjoyable time, and I highly recommend it. Barry Humphries is sublime, and I'm pretty impressed with how he has been Dame Edna for, what, 40 some years now???

It's all good.

Edited to add possums!! :)

Edited on Sat Feb-14-04 08:50 PM by arwalden
It's been playing at the Kennedy Center for the longest time... but I haven't heard or seen any ads for it recently. I wonder if it closed.

-- Allen

Edit: It's Still Showing

The comedy whodunit Shear Madness has performed in the Theater Lab for approximately 6,500 performances, making it the third longest-running play in the history of the American theater (It's sister productions in Boston and Chicago are #1 and #2).

Washington's Shear Madness takes place in present-day Georgetown, in the Shear Madness Hair Styling Salon at 3229 P Street, N.W. The mixture of audience sleuthing and up-to-the-minute improvisational humor delights both Washingtonians and visitors alike.
