Valentine Strife in India
Militant Hindu nationalists in India said they planned to punish any couples they found observing St. Valentine's Day, because observance of a Christian saint's day violates Hindu traditions.
"The heads of those celebrating will be shaved and their faces blackened," said Dilip Khandelwal, a leader of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad party in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh.
Valentine's Day has been steadily gaining popularity in India. Shopping malls, candy stores, five-star hotels and roadside vendors offer chocolates, tiny red cushions, cakes and pizzas -- all heart-shaped. In Indian cities, florists and gift shops have filled their shelves to capacity.
