I'm going to Chicago today!

I'm very excited. Tomorrow night I'll see the restored Colleen Moore film "Twinkletoes," and then I will spend the rest of the time scouring the wonderful museums, and taking a cemetery tour with one of my dearest friends (who happens to be a freeper - ugh - although I think he's finally coming around a little).

Any exciting things going on back there that I should check out in the next week?

(I live in Seattle - any other route would be way too time-consuming).

So, I will not have a car while I'm there, but I am pretty comfortable on the various forms of mass transit in Chicago.

One of my most favorite cities in the world. I love the culture, the great architecture and history, and the people. It's truly an amazing place.

4. Avoid Navy Pier

Huge rip-off with virtually no redeeming value. Noisy, crowded and expensive. We discovered this great museum on the University of
chcago campus. I think it's call the Oriental Institute. It's relatively unknown and has one of the best collections of antiquities from the Middle East in the world. Well worth it if you've already done the other museums.

15. I was very impressed.

Their collection isn't huge, but everything is in incredible condition. Only two of the three areas were opened when we were there this spring. But it was worth it. And they let you take pictures which really suprised me!

6. Lincoln Park Zoo

Is pretty cool too. I'm not that into zoos, but I enjoy this one. And it's free! Also, I think the air show is going this weekend and you can get a good view of it from there.

8. How great!

Our lovely city welcomes all DUers with open arms. I don't know if you will have enough time, but in your stay please try and check out some of our theaters! The steppenwolf theater is quite grand, as is the shakespearean theater on navy pier. Perhaps the goodman has some stuff showing. Try and check out www.chicagotribune.com , because there on the side bar you click on "leisure" on on the next page you choose "stage". should have some good info on what there is playing. 10. If you like Indian Food...

...Moti Mahal...it's on Belmont, fairly close to the Red Line station. :9:9:9 Not expensive for the lunch buffet either.

16. Museum of Science & Industry

If you like trains, transportation etc, the Museum just removed their 60 yr old Model Train Display and replaced it with a new HUGE HO train setup. Lots of trains running at the same time.

It models the railroads from Seattle to Chicago! Appropos for you!

It's very impressive, 14ft tall Sears Tower, etc.

Cemetery Tour? The one at Irving Park and Clark has ALL the movers and shakers of early Chicago. Quite impressive. Bring a camera.

17. Yep - we're going there!

Some people think it's morbid to visit cemeteries, but I love them, as does my friend who lives in Evanston. I find them very interesting historically, and often they can be quite beautiful.

We're even heading down to Bachelor's Grove, the allegedly haunted spot on the South Side.

So, if you don't hear from me after next Tuesday, call your favorite exorcist ;-)

19. The Green Room

I think it's called. Or maybe the Green Door? (Help me out on this one Chicagoans) It's a bar on the north side that was the haunt of Al Capone. It's real cool if you like Art Deco and has live jazz. Always packed. It's in a somewhat shakey neighborhood, so be careful.

I've been to all of the cemeteries - we have many interesting ones.

Graceland is a must-see.
