Book burners
http://www.detnews.com/2003/religion/0308/07/d07d-238361.htm

Librarians and clergy at other churches expressed mixed emotions after learning that members of the Jesus Non-denominational Church burned "Harry Potter" books and copies of the Book of Mormon and non-King James Version Bibles.

Other books, magazines, posters, compact discs and movies that members believe do not promote God also went up in smoke Sunday, as more than 50 people gathered outside the church for the fiery display. Among the incinerated items were Shania Twain's album "The Woman in Me" and the Dan Aykroyd movie "Coneheads."

5. So it went like this:
Pastor: These Harry Potter books are evil, we must burn them

Idiot parishioners: Good idea!

Pastor: Let's take up a collection to clear the shelves at Borders of Harry Potter books.

Idiots: We raised $1,500 pastor!

Pastor: Excellent! Go buy Potter books so no one else can, and we'll burn 'em so that evil witch child-misleading gay-friendly whore Rowling gets NOTHING!

Rabrrrrrr, shaking pastor's hands: Congratulations on being an idiot! I'm sure the hungry appreciate your zeal.

The very name of the church speaks of xenophobia, mistrust, and insularity. You don't call yourself "non-denominational" unless you want it damn well known that you have no Christian association outside your own congregation or at least like-minded people. it's a blatant and arrogant way to say to the world "You are not us, and we are not you!" Oh, so Christian.

6. I told a certain young girl
of my acquaintance that I would give her the Harry Potter books for her birthday . She turned pale , and I thought she was going to PASS OUT . She said her pastor said they are evil . She also cringed visably at the nudity ( tasteful nudity , I might add) in my several art books

I thought (since I am related to the child) that I could influence her

WRONG

The pull of the church is too strong . I gave up (temporarily)

7. So sad,
so sad indeed.

Just can't trust the minister-types who decide what's "evil" and what is righteous and good. Certainly, a minister's role to help people discern, and to be a prophetic vioce and speak for the voiceless and the marginalized and challenge us all to be better human beings, but the guys who are obsessed with devils, demons, and Satan? Those guys have a problem. There is a much bigger Satan out there than Harry Potter leading children away from Christ, and it is called poverty, hopelessness, suffering, anguish, fear, anxiety, bad stewardship, xenophobia, compassionlessness, and hatred.

8. So long as they stick to burning copies they bought with their own money
and obey any burn bans or similar laws regarding incinerating such materials, they're free to do as they like with their own property. I think it's pretty f***ing stupid, but it's a free country. If they try to get ME to burn MY copies, well, they can kiss my liberal ass. So long as the writers/performers get their royalties, hell, who cares if people use a book for a paperweight, a holy icon, burn it, or wipe their butts with it?

Weird people. What do they think it proves, to buy things just to burn them?

10. How to make lots of money:
1. write a book that upsets nutcases;
2. encourage them to buy up copies and burn them.
