The American Battle Monuments Commission is launching a web based WWII registry to collect names of those who served in the War or who contributed to the War Effort. This can be done at www.wwiimemorial.com or by calling 1-800-639-4WW2.

The World War II Memorial will be dedicated in ceremonies on 29 May 2004 in Washington DC and all Veterans are encouraged to attend.

I looked for my father, no dice.

Went to register him and it wouldn't take registration without e-mail address filled in. Now
what percentage of WWII vets. have current e-mail. My father doesn't; he's 84 and gets
confused, can't keep track of his computer, and let all e-mail accounts and web accounts
collapse.

But it makes me wonder . . . Why the hell would they need e-mail address for these guys?
What about'the ones dead?

Or . . am I being stupid? Do they want MY e-mail, the person registering a WWII vet?

24. Just talked to my grandmother

My grandmother was listed as the one who registered my grandfather and she is not on-line, so I just asked how she did it. Apparently, over a year ago a letter asking for the names of WWII vets was sent to everyone they knew served (tried the last known address) or their widow. You could fill-out the dedication form and mail it in or sign up on-line. Maybe your dad received the letter, but didn't return it?

I just signed up my great-uncle who didn't have any other family and the email address is just for notification.

And today would be my Dad's 84th borthday. Happy Birthday, Dad!

My mother was a Navy nurse; Dad saved Patton's tanks (it's what he always said); Father-in-law was one of the fist Americans into Berlin.

16. She just passed away

My mothers Aunt, Laura Mort served as an army nurse in England throughout the war. She returned to the states at the end, and remained as a V.A. Nurse in Batavia N.Y. and the Rochester area. She was like a second Grandmother to my family. We are going to miss her dearly. She was 90 years old and passed quickly.

17. We got to see some of the bronze work for the memorial

In a fairly remote corner of Northeast Oregon, Valley Bronze Foundry in Joseph, OR (pop. 1,054) was awarded the contract for the ornamental bronze work for the memorial. We took a tour of the foundry last week when we were up there on a camping trip.

Interesting to see what can happen in a little timber/farming town when people with some vision get to work...

19. My Dad and My Uncle

Dad was a Marine recon photographer/tail gunner stationed at Kwajelein in the South Pacific. My Uncle Stanley was in the Navy.

They've both passed on now.

ON EDIT - I just went to the site and registered my father as well as my mother, who served the war effort as a telephone operator for NJ Bell during the War.

One in Artilery in North Africa/Italy

One aboard USS Pheonix (was at Pearl Harbor)

One aboard USS Texas.

Father aboard the USS Tuscaloosa was part of the D-Day invasion.

Uncle who was killed in action in France.

Uncle who served in the Red Army captured by the Germans. Do the Russians count? They should.

was at Dunkirk. My brother has the certificate he got from a French commander, typed in French.

27. Medusa & Holland at Pearl Harbor

Granddad (mom's dad) on the Medusa and dad on the Holland. The Holland was out to sea during the attack but the Medusa was in the thick of things and managed to rescue survivors from ships that went down.

Neither of them is in the database. Grandad passed years ago but dad is still around.

I have a grandfather that just passed 2 years ago. He served in WWII, he was on Omaha Beach. Normady, 1944 EOD. He was a Sargent and in the Army. After the war, against the Germans, in 1955, he adopted 2 german childern, a girl age 7 and a boy age 6 (my father!) He put all sights of the war aside and adpoted two german children. To me, he is awesome in my book. Without him, I would not be alive right now!!!

I'm sending it to all my family and friends.

My Dad, his identical twin brother, and all my Uncles (from both sides) served, except a couple younger ones, who were in the Korean Conflict, I am proud to say.

My Dad was in all the big battles in Europe except D-Day, 4th armored division - went the next day! Probably was what saved him.

Some pretty horrible stories about it - mostly from my Grandma after he died (she lived to 102). He must have carried all the horrible memories all his life - never spoke at all about it much.

My other (Mom's Mom) Grandma was "Rosie the Riviter" at the Curtis Wright aircraft plant in Buffalo, New York.

God, I will just puke if any of the chickenhawk repukes DARE to show up - especially that treasonous, lying bastard, bunker boy bush*.

They should all shun him by turning their backs on him if he does. Piece of human garbage that he is.
