What kind of cartoons did you like when you were a kid?
Edited on Tue May-06-08 01:42 AM by Connonym
And do you still like cartoons?

We used to always watch the typical Scooby Doo, Penelope Pitstop, George of the Jungle, Tom & Jerry, etc. Because I've always been a dork, my favorite thing was Schoolhouse Rock (and I own the entire collection on DVD, sad but true). ETA: How could I have forgotten the Flintstones and the Jetsons!?!

Edited on Tue May-06-08 02:00 AM by Oeditpus Rex
I still love the old WB stuff — Bugs, Daffy, Elmer, Porky, Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote, Foghorn Leghorn ("BOY! I say BOY! You're doin' it all WRONG, son!"), Sylvester and Tweety, Speedy Gonzales, the two über-polite groundhogs... never really cared for Pepe LePew, though.

Apart from WB, there were Tom Slick, George udda Jungle and Super Chicken.

And he was instantly transformed into...

...a crumpled heap on the floor.

Super Chicken theme

Tom Slick theme

Can't find the original "George of the Jungle" theme. It's all the new one or the crappy movie. x(

Dammit, how could I mention three Jay Ward toons and not his first one, the all-time great "Rocky and His Friends"?

We watch one episode a night -- it has become our "routine." They love the show, and get very upset if I'm not home from work in time to watch an episode before they go to bed.

The movie sucks, by the way.

And I liked the '90s Batman cartoon, which they used to extend the DC universe through the Batman/Superman show and then Justice League and Justice League Unlimited in the '00s.

I never got into Scooby Doo for some reason. It just never really appealed to me.

(never cared for Mickey and the gang). I can't stand to watch animation now. Used to work as an assistant animator for Disney, and part of my job included troubleshooting the final animation. Now that my eye has been trained to see every screw up it's kinda killed the fun of watching it. :-(

...and Popeye, simply because those were on all the time.

Of course I've probably seen all the Warner bros. cartoons 2 or 3 times over during the course of my kidhood.

Also, enjoyed The Mighty Heroes, a rather subversive take on super heroes by Ralph Bakshi pre-Fritz the Cat.

And, I loved Johnny Quest. I couldn't wait to watch that cool opening montage with the hip music.

59. Oh, wow! I remember The Mighty Heroes :)
I didn't know it was Ralph Bakshi, though. There's a great documentary on Frank Frazetta with Ralph Bakshi in it, since the two of them are good friends.

I was going to mention The Mighty Hercules, too, so it's good to see someone else remembers that :) (I've downloaded some torrents of some of the episodes, and you can also find DVD collections on iOffer.com... Just pay attention to how many episodes are contained because it seems like there may have been around 60 episodes, but I'm not real sure of that.)

And then there were all the Terry Toons (more on The Mighty Heroes in that link) and the toons under Famous Studios including Popeye, Baby Huey, Caspar the Friendly Ghost, Little Audrey, and many others ;)

I do remember seeing some of the early Astro Boy cartoons and have caught one on Adult Swim or Boomerang recently. The animation quality was "rough" but still had good plotlines.

Of course, Warner Brothers, Fleischer Studios, Filmation, Hanna-Barbera (I remember watching Johnny Quest primetime with my dad :D) and any other greats I've forgotten. I didn't watch Speed Racer until mid-70s or so.

My favorite modern cartoon is The Venture Brothers - "Go Team Venture!" :P

42. "Krazy Kat" - one of the greatest comics of all time, by George Herriman
Edited on Tue May-06-08 01:07 PM by Perry Logan

If you don't know the early-20th-century comic, "Krazy Kat," you're in for a treat.

Krazy Kat started around 1900, I believe, and ran for several decades. It won high praise from critics for both its language and artistic qualities. There is a musical, and even a novel, based on it.

Krazy Kat is before my time, but I learned about it from my dad's collection. It's surreal and dreamlike and lots of enchanting fun.

60. My favorite was Rocko's Modern Life.
Still is. That show rules, and it's amusing to watch it now and notice all of the subtle adult content that I didn't notice as a forth grader.

61. Wow... I hardly know where to begin...
I've been a fan of cartoons all my life, from stuff in the late 80's/early 90's - the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Rocky and Bullwinkle, Underdog, and classic Looney Tunes episodes (all on Nickelodeon back in the day), Ren & Stimpy, Rocko's Modern Life, Batman, Superman, Animaniacs, Pinky and the Brain - to stuff that's still going strong today - The Simpsons and South Park - not to mention a bunch of cartoons from the past decade or so - Justice League, Justice League Unlimited, Spongebob, Futurama, Family Guy, Ben 10. Plus, there's all the stuff on Adult Swim, about 80% of which is pure genius.

I like cartoons. Like, a LOT.

62. I liked the really old ones, ancient Popeye and little goofy
one of a kind shit - the old woman in the shoe and the kids start a jug band when they're supposed to be sleeping...old corny fairy tales and early animation.

Those were my favorites. Loved Schoolhouse Rock, too.

Still love cartoons. Love Justice League and Xmen cartoons. My son got me to like Spongebob.

65. Well, I did watch a lot of old stuff, but my contemporary favorites were probably
"Tiny Toon Adventures," "Animaniacs," and that "Batman" animated series from the early 90's - you know, the really dark one where people got killed and disfigured and stuff.

68. Bullwinkle.
Flintstones. We got a color TV in 1964, so we got to see the Flintstones in prime time and in COLOR!!

Underdog (same folks as Rocky & Bullwinkle).

My kid was into Ren & Stimpy. I didn't get it. Then she was into Aqua Teen Hunger Force. I didn't get that either.

I don't really enjoy watching cartoons anymore, not even the Simpsons.

75. Bugs Bunny, Bullwinkle and Johnny Quest.
I llove any animation Warner Bros did prior to 1965. IMO Hanna Barbara ruined the craft of cartoons in the 60s when they came on the scene ... no more shadows and cheap background drawings.

As an adult - love the Simpsons. Watch it in reruns at least once a day. Renn and Stimpy are great. Animaniacs tried to be as clever as the earlier Warner Bros stuff and came damn close.

Pinky and the Brain - very funny stuff. (Little did we know that this seemingly innocuous cartoon would serve as a future president's role model.)

76. OK here we go...
Edited on Wed May-07-08 07:24 PM by JonathanChance
As a Kid:

Rocky and Bullwinkle
George of the Jungle (watch out for that tree!)
All the Loony Tunes, especially Road Runner (What's not to love? Idiots, Explosives, and Falling Anvils)
Tiny Toon Adventures
Animaniacs
The WB's Batman and Superman Cartoons. (They were awesome, I especially liked the one where the three kids were showing their different versions of who they think Batman is. IIRC, that episode included an interpretation based on Miller's The Dark Knight Returns)
Darkwing Duck (now that I'm grown up, I'd like to see it again to pick up all the "grownup" jokes I missed.
TaleSpin (As an aviation buff, I couldn't pass it up, but now it seems a bit... over the top. Come on, a Twin engined amphibious cargo plane pulling off moves that an F6F Hellcat would have a hard time making?)

As an adult:

Digimon (Yes, this is what got me addicted to anime. Seriously. Hey, why are you laughing?)
Cowboy Bebop (Wonderful series, awesome music)
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (Only complaint is Togusa's stupid looking mullet)
Sealab 2021 (Oops.. Dart in your neck! Still makes me chuckle to this day)
Bleach (I sort of lost interest after the whole Bount Arc.)
Excel Saga
Death Note (Good. Lord. What a fucked up series. I don't know how I'd hold up in Light's shoes.)
Azumanga Daioh (I blame my college friends and AMV Hell 3 for getting me interested in this series. I know people who are exactly like the characters in this show.)
Chobits (I have been told that I have impersonated Chii while drunk off my ass)
Zipang (I never finished the series before Youtube yanked the episodes. Think the old movie The Final Countdown but instead of the USS Midway getting sent back to WWII, a Japanese maritime Self Defense Force AEGIS Cruiser gets sent back.)
Trigun

77. I was a kid of cartoon-watching age in the early-to-mid 70s,
thus, it was the heyday of mass-produced Hanna Barbera crap, and I preferred the old Looney Tunes and Tom and Jerry cartoons. Never underestimate the intelligence of children, even they can tell quality from crap.
