What is needed to prove you have a rental lease to show residency?
My wife is going to be traveling to Europe for work fairly soon. She needs to get her Visa from the German consulate... since she works within site of the GW Bridge and is staying with some friends in that area, going to NYC is very easy for her. However, because she legally lives in CT and not within site of the GW bridge, that would require her to go to Boston, which would be a huge inconvenience.

She is under the impression that all she needs to show she is leasing the room from her friends is to have them sign a piece of paper with their name and address and some rental terms on it.

I thought she would need a legal document that is signed & notarized by a 3rd party and/or a lawyer, and possibly more.

I figured I would do some work in advance to double-check and make sure she won't have to make an extra trip into NY.

3. If the company requires her to go, then they better be ready
to pay for the expenses. Why does she have to go to Boston?

4. Because, she is technically a resident of Connecticut
and, if you live in CT, you have to go to Boston.

However, if she can show residency in NJ, she can hop across the GW Bridge into NYC and go there. The problem is, she is living with a friend of her parents and there is no formal rent agreement. My wife thinks she can just write, "Mrs. NewJeffCT is living on Main Street in Ft Lee, NJ and is paying $500/month rent for 12 months" and have her and these friends since it and it's okay.

I'm not so sure.

5. well, it's really up to the Germans...
but I think she's SOL. There's a big difference between living somewhere and what your legal residence is. I live in England, but I'm on a student visa, so my legal residence is in Michigan. Does she have a CT or NJ driver's license? That could be the clincher. Can't she just do it by mail anyway? I would think that might just be easier, and it wouldn't matter if the mail was going to NY or Boston.

I would think.

13. She should check
The UK consulate in Chicago sends all visas next day fed-ex. Perhaps other countries have similar policies.

6. why not just formalize the lease
You can get a standard NJ lease from any rental agency or real estate place. You might even google advanced search for one using a .doc parameter.

Seems to me that if she lives in NJ 4 or 5 days a week for work, it's a legitimate address and she shouldn't have to be inconvenienced with going to Boston.

If you go that route, can't find a lease, and need one, pm me.

7. my wife is very stubborn
If she thinks all she needs is a word document with the address on it, then it will be very difficult for me to tell her otherwise.

I just want to be prepared for later today when she calls me and tells me that she needs something more.

9. Why does she need that? Why not just use whatever it is that the two of you have?
Whether it's the deed or a lease at your place? Seems like that would be a lot easier, esp. if your home is her permanent address.

10. she is trying to get out of having to go to Boston
she lives in CT Friday-Sunday nights, but in NJ during the week for work. However, it's under an informal arrangement with some family friends.

If she can show that she does live in NJ via a lease document, then she can see the German consulate in NYC on her lunch hour. If not, then she'll have to take a whole day off from work and go up to Boston because CT residency requires you to go to Boston.

11. Oh, gotcha! You didn't say it was an issue of which German consulate to go to.
I was confused about the Boston versus NYC thing.

A printed out lease or rent form and then bring it to her friends and have them fill it out and sign it.

Bureaucrats always like pre-printed forms.

Or to simplify, maybe she can go on the internet and find one by Googling "free forms" + "rental
agreements"

Any utility bill like a ph bill in her name would help as well.
