My daughter took her kid scissors yesterday and
totally hacked her beautiful hair all to hell yesterday.

I got home and my wife was in tears holding a box of hair.

This is the third time she's done this and it gets worse each time. She's officially lost her scissors privileges until she's 18. I dread the day she gets her hands on my electric hair trimmer!

I've been told by others that they and/or their kids have done this - and I know it will grow back and all - but until it does I'll have to explain to everyone why she has hair like Moe from the Three Stooges after sticking it in a wood chipper. Sigh...

Anyone else had this happen?

1. Sure. I've been throught this...
Both personally and with my kids. But not three times each. Perchance you should be more emphatic about the undesirable consequences of self-barbering.

21. My daughter was four when she removed
One of her ponytails. I was soooo sad, but it grew back and now it's one of our fond memories of what childhood is all about. She will soon be six and I already miss some of those more "innocent" moments. Take lots of pictures and keep a smile on your face-- life is too short (no pun intended).

Your daughter will eventually learn not to cut her hair. Please don't take scissors away from her. Learning to cut is an important step in child development. This is just one of those minor bumps in life. Just chill and let your daughter get on with being a kid. She needs to learn the eye/hand skills that go along with cutting. You may need to supervise her while she has scissors, but don't take them away from her.
cmd, former kindergarten teacher

edit: I have seen dozens of kid cuts in my 30+ years in the classroom. It's normal behavior in the best of kids.

cut a big "V" into his hair, just grabbed a bunch in the front and whacked it off. Luckily with boys we just shaved his head.

9. I think all kids have done that at one time or another.
I have a photo that my mother took of me when I was about 4 years old where I had cut my bangs off right down to the roots.

10. Easy solution
After my daughter did it the 2nd time, I started taking her to the beauty shop once a week.

This allowed the beautician to help her understand how much prettier her hair was when she use a BRUSH rather than scissors.

She never took the scissors to her hair again and it cost me all of $5.00 for a weekly shampoo and blow dry.

13. My son did this 3 times
after the 3rd time I threatened to shave him bald.

He never did it again.

(Of course, now that he's 16, he may not consider being shaved bald such a threat.)

(don't you just hate it when people say that???)

My daughter, now 20, got home from having her beautiful red hair trimmed the other day, and said that the owner of the salon told her she should do hair-modeling, because her hair is so lovely. (Doesn't that sound like great career advice???)

Anyway, that got my daughter and me reminiscing about when she was in 7th grade and dyed a chunk of her hair BLACK. Ughh. I can still remember how UGLY it looked, to have this gorgeous red hair 'destroyed' by that big blob of black dye.

It took FOREVER for it to grow out! I'd much rather face the scissors - at least you can doctor it into a short 'do'!

15. *raises hand* it's universal.
Mine did it only once, though. And that was because Mom was combing her at the mirror, she had to get out for one second and there was a scissor at arm's reach. Because that, you know, was the proper place for doing things with one's hair.

Mom is a bit more careful now.

18. My son did this right after getting a haircut once
Let your daughter explain it to people IMHO.
They do have kiddy scissors that won't cut hair .
They barely cut paper though .

I told my son that there is a special school
for cutting hair .

Also you could go buy a bunch of dolls let your
daughter play hair salon , supervised of course .

that way she can get it out of her system and
express her hair cutting creativity

23. You know
They truly are good kids, too. My husband and I are incredibly proud of them. They are nice, polite, they are good to each other and their friends, they are respectful of others feelings. It is their future that I am fighting for right now, not mine and that is why this election scares the crap out of me!

Thank you so much for the nice compliment!

24. Yes, little games like hide-n-go-seek turn into wrestling matches!
They can't just say "I found you" they have to tackle each other in the process.

Our youngest boy has been protecting me from the invisible monkeys that are in our house today. He had been karate chopping and kicking "air" all day. It is rather funny!

25. My kids have done this too
But not so much that I notice. If they hadn't told me I'd never have realized it (apparently they just cut teeny little bits).

We always tell them how beautiful their hair is, so maybe that's why they don't cut it themselves. Also my husband teasingly takes the scissors and pretends like he'll cut it and they flinch and say NO!

My older daughter wants her hair cut short but is waiting for me to take her to the hairdresser.

Good luck! My lil bro did that when he was younger and we still joke about it to this day. :)

30. I had long hair until 2nd or 3rd grade and I hated it!
I never cut it though. I'm from the kind of family that would have beaten the crap out of me if I had. I stopped doing school work because I couldn't stand it. Mom finally cut it, but it just grew back, and it happened again. Then she finally said, go ahead do it however you want, and I was happy. Maybe your little one just hates her long hair. For a kid, short hair is way more manageable. It's not getting in the way when she's trying to do something, and she doesn't have to worry about it getting caught in anything, etc. The beauty shop is a great idea. She'll think she's special when you do it. She'll love it. Kids are great. And to those of you that posted pictures: Those are just beautiful children. Kids rock!

31. I had to ban my daughter from scissors at 4,
she did a great hack job on her hair. Even today, at 7 1/2, she is restricted to using them in the kitchen only.

My first clue that she had done it was the sinking feeling I got when I found a wad of her hair on the livingroom floor.

32. My mother kept my hair pretty much crewcut til I was 12
and I hated it, but I still cut chunks out of it whenever I got my hands on scissors. I cut doll hair, the dog's hair, any hair I got close to. I guess because they were razor-cutting mine every two weeks, I thought ALL hair - including doll hair - would grow back that fast.

Hair's temporary. Cut it brutally short and forget about it. Wait until she's a teenager. You should see the cuts my stepsons (17 and 20) have given themselves over the years - skunk-cuts, mohawks, reverse mohawks, fades, buzzcuts, bowlcuts, baldies - it all grows back. If she does a really horrendous job of it and you make her explain when people ask why she looks like a hedgehog, she'll remember it and maybe give the scissors a rest next time.

(I grew my hair long as soon as my mother quit razor-cutting it. She still hates my long hair, and I'm 44 now.)
