Poll question: Favorite cola?
I was tempted to type "favorite coke?", since us Southerners use that term generically ;), but I decided to keep it strictly on-topic.

39. How is it not a cola?
I used the term "cola" to mean Coke-type-tasting sodas, as opposed to the broader term "soda" which would include cream soda, blue cream soda (mmm), root beer, etc., etc,. etc.

40. by law, baby!!!
I'd never considered it to be, and a quick google search for +"dr pepper" +cola resulted in several webpages stating that it was not cola. Check this out:

Dr Pepper is Not a Cola: According to the Texas Handbook Online, prior to a 1963 district court ruling bottlers could not carry Dr Pepper along with Pepsi-Cola or Coca-Cola without violating their franchise contracts because they were not permitted to bottle competing brands. But in 1963 the United States Fifth District Court in Dallas declared that Dr Pepper was not a cola, thus allowing Dr Pepper to expand its reach.
Wikipedia explains why Dr Pepper is not a "cola" drink.

found here: http://austin.about.com/od/beverages/p/drpepper.htm

and from wikipedia:

W.W. Clements, a former CEO and president of the Dr Pepper/7-Up Company, described the taste of Dr Pepper as one of a kind, saying "I've always maintained you can't tell anyone what Dr Pepper tastes like because it's so different. It's not an apple, it's not an orange, it's not a strawberry, it's not a root beer, it's not even a cola. It's a different kind of drink with a unique taste all its own."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dr_Pepper

So, there you go. I've never head of it being called a cola before now either. All I see that they have in common is colour.

83. Seriously!
I almost never drink soda now, but I did as a kid, and the those two types of soda just didn't exist in the same soda world to me. I loved coke, liked RC, but didn't like Pepsi. If cherry coke counts, I remember that Meijer brand cherry cola was better than cherry coke or cherry pepsi. These are things that exist in the back of my brain where what I learned in college is supposed to be.

79. Actually, that's when they switched to the High Fructose Corn Poison
The "New Coke" thing was really all a scam so you would be sure to run out of old Coke by the time they rolled out the mutated "Classic" version.

It tastes better than the New Coke shit, but then so does raw battery acid. But once you have had the Mexican Coke, you can't go back.

The limited annual run of "Kosher Coke" would probably be a close second (haven't tried it, since it can't be found in my one-synagogue town) but it still comes in plastic bottles, so the Mexican version (in the good old glass bottle) still has the edge.

I don't drink anything out of plastic bottles when I can avoid it. Just another petroleum by product we can do without.

People use it for things that blatantly aren't coke. Like, as in your example, Dr. Pepper. There is a distinct difference between Dr. Pepper and Coca-Cola. Kleenex tissue and any other tissue, more or less still just tissue.

Not a huge Cola fan, but I like to support RC if I can find it just 'cause I feel like I'm rooting for the underdog. I love some of the flavored Jones Sodas, but I've never had Jones Cola; I've never had Tab, either. Of the ones listed that I've had, the only one I don't really care for is Dr. Pepper- which is sort of a blasphemous thing to say, being from Texas...

31. Dr. Pepper-like drinks have some goofy names
I remember back when I was in junior high there was a Pepsi-brand Dr. Pepper knockoff called "Dr. Slice", and I believe Wal-Mart's Dr. Pepper-type drink is called "Dr. Thunder." H-E-B's Dr. Pepper drink is called "Dr. B." (which I suppose they chose over the slightly less appetizing "Dr. Butt", as the "B." stands for the store chain's founder's name, H. E. Butt!) And of course, there's good ol' Mr. Pibb, which tastes close enough to Dr. Pepper for me, even if Pibb never completed his doctorate. I'd never heard of "Dr. Goodguy" before; I like it! haha

Other than that I've pretty much given up on soda, I have an occasional IBC cream soda or root beer or better yet one of the locally brewed cream sodas or root beers, or ginger ales.

When I drank the bigger brands Coke was usually my choice, Pepsi tended to my tastes to be a little to syrupy.

81. Jones Green Apple is pretty damn good too.
Used to drink Shasta Red Apple as a kid. They went to HFCS long before the big brands did, and as awful as a cola is with that shit in it, any fruit flavored beverage is 10 times worse. Apple flavored corn just doesn't work.

First time I tried the Jones Green it was like a happy childhood flashback. I can't keep that stuff around the house or I'll drink too much of it. And that's an old habit I don't want to get back into (learned the hard way what HFCS does to the body when I drank Coke like water)

71. Other:
Cherry Coke. To the point where some of my more presumptuous friends have ordered it for me at restaurants because they knew that's what I'd be getting anyway.

I liked Vanilla Coke too, but can't seem to find it anymore. :/

77. All Hail Mr. Pibb!!!
Ahem.

I mean, "Other."

Then Dr. Pepper, then Coke, then every other liquid possibly consumed by humans.

Then Pepsi.

On an unrelated sidenote, what in hell did someone post to get themselves deleted from THIS thread???
