What's the best alcoholic drink...
...for someone with a low tolerance for it?

And by low I mean I can't abide most of it. But I've come to the realization that I'm not going to meet someone sitting on my ass at home. So what's a girl to do?

and BTW, if you have some suggestions on how to meet people without going to bars, I'm all ears.

1. Sangria or a wine spritzer
Sangria is cut by the fruit in it; wine spritzers have club soda mixed with them. Or lite beer.

Have you considered volunteering for your local public radio or TV station? I have seen some friendships and even relationships develop among people who volunteer at mine. Also, you might check and see if there is an organization in your town called Professional Volunteers; that is a singles group that volunteers to work at various non profit events. Their leaders set up the crews so there are even numbers of men, women etc.

Good luck!

Kaluha and milk. Obviously, you don't want to drink too many or you'll end up like Kenny Rogers.

9. Long Island Ice Tea
You won't be able to stand up but you'll probably get laid.

Meeting people? Get involved. Political groups, church groups, classes, volunteer work. Anywhere there are people who have the same interests as you. Personal ads work too - that's how I met my lover and we've been together 18 years, I also met some good friends.

18. orded non alcoholic beer. OR: just order the tonic with lots of lime.
Edited on Fri Jun-06-08 04:56 PM by yellowdogintexas
Tonic and lime are wonderful in hot weather anyway, very refreshing. I fooled a group at a party big time once..hot night, lots of dancing. Ordered a very large tonic with extra lime and they all thought I was drinking gin and tonic and they couldn't believe I was standing up. It was great fun to tell them I was not drinking at all. I was cold sober, but I wasn't thirsty.

Watered down Happy Hour drinks are good.

edited to add: any drink made w/ fruit juice: Bloody Mary, Screwdrivers, SaltyDogs,

I love Sangria, love love it and sometimes you can get it made w/ white wine which is really refreshing.

Seriously, any type of wine spritzer, lite or non alcoholic beer, white or rose wine, sangria..light refreshing summery drinks with fairly low alcohol content

20. well
For drinks with some alcohol:
- white wine spritzer
- 3/2 beer (thats beer with 1.5% alcohol)
- some frozen drinks (can get fairly watered down)
- or for just having a drink in your hand for looks that you don't necessarily drink: brandy/cognac

Or you could opt for non-alcoholic alternatives that look like drinks:
- virgin daiquiri, pina colada, or anything virgin really
- N/A beer
- juice spritzer (I prefer cranberry and seltzer with a lime wedge)
- Arnold Palmer (sounds like a drink when you order it but its 50/50 lemonade and iced tea)

For places to meet others without a bar scene, I'd recommend charity work or social clubs :)

40. Oh God. NOT N/A beer!
They make nonalcoholic beer by starting with the shittiest beer you can imagine, then making it worse by extracting most of the alcohol from it. So you get a double bonus of badness: all the disgust of drinking bad-tasting beer, and no buzz to reward you for attempting to stomach it. Don't drink N/A beer. If you're going to drink beer at all, drink seven-ounce bottles.

My fatherly advice to From the Ashes: I assume you want to socialize with lots of other people, and here's a little secret: going by yourself into any kind of a social situation is a very bad idea. Especially if it's a bar, but clubs that don't serve alcohol are the same way. Obviously you must be stuck up if you don't go there with your friends, right? Think about it: you ever hear a bar advertise that it's a great place to go by yourself? Ah hell no, they sell themselves as places to go with your friends.

So you're stuck with the very difficult task of finding someone to be your friend. You get one, soon you'll have several. And you don't want some moran loser who gets shitfaced every Saturday night. This means there's only one way to solve your problem. Tomorrow morning, get up fairly early--seven or eight in the morning is good. Dress in pretty, casual clothes, a little bit of jewelry, a soft hairstyle and a little makeup, and go to the supermarket by nine. There you will find the nice single men. Find one and invite him for coffee. They might find you--hang out near things that aren't easy to cook, and guys will approach you to ask if you know how to prepare various items. I'm not kidding here.

The alternate is if you have a LOT of specialized knowledge. Computers, cars, guitars, something like that. Maybe you play bass. Go to a music store and look for single guitarists. Try to refrain from asking him if he knows the difference between a guitarist and a savings bond. (The savings bond will eventually mature.)

Now, once you decide to take him drinking...this I recommend because the best way to find out if the guy is a total asshole is to try to get him majorly trashed. Anyway, bartenders will make you drinks that only have half a shot of liquor in them. Sip on one of those and you'll get a nice hazy feeling, but nothing really terrible. Mai tais and pina coladas are nice.

Once you start going into places with company, you'll meet people. You won't do it if you go alone.

It's light and refreshing and served with a lemon slice in a special weiss beer glass. :toast:

I speak from experience.

Also, weissbier is for women or occasionally for a man, but is not suitable for a major session.

36. LOL! I lived in Germany as a child and have visited there as an adult.
I have a good friend in Munich with whom I stay (she's a native Munchener). I LOVE German beer. Here in the Southeastern USA, where it is incredibly hot and humid, a Radler is quite a refreshing drink. Too much alcohol in the heat of the day (90-100 degress F plus 80% - 99% humidity) can be too much!

Cheers! :toast: (I'll have to be a wuss! ;) )

25. Meeting people:
Museums, churches, forums, singles dances, fairs, supermarkets, school.

Low drinks: Beer with a 4.9% or less. However, each body is differant and I've found during that "time of the month" your resistance is really low and you can get smashed quickly.

27. Reading the replies
above, this may come as a surprise to you, but there are many people who don't drink. If you're not used to it, or don't care for alcohol, why push yourself?

I agree, bars are typically not a good place to meet people. The only time I go to a bar is for after-work gatherings with colleagues, which don't last too long.

Unfortunately there is no magical place/way to meet someone! *sigh*

Wishing you good luck!

28. sloe gin fizz in a martini glass, diva.
You should be able to handle any of the sweet drinks out there, but your tolerance will change, and so will your taste for alcohol.

Sloe gin fizz is always a good one, b/c not a lot of guys heard of it. But some bars, esp. the dives, might not have it. So have an alternative.

Go to a local Dem Meetup, or a Meetup for something that you are interested in.

33. I had to quit drinking a few years ago, and I did this one time
I was in a group of old drinking buddies, and we went to a bar. I excused myself to go to the mens room, and I walked over to the bar. I told the bartender that I had an alcohol problem. I slipped him five dollars and said "I am going to order a Red Bull with a double shot of Absolute Vodka on ice. Just give me a double Red Bull on ice and keep the vodka."

He was so cool about it no body knew. My buddies thought it was amazing I could drink three doubles and still walk out of the place.

It is the bartenders job to keep the customers happy, not drunk.

Edited on Fri Jun-06-08 07:39 PM by Gormy Cuss
Better still, just get soda water with a lemon or lime, or tonic water and lime. Looks like a drink but has none of the side effects.

The best way to meet people outside of work (dangerous, that one) and bars (ditto) is to find activities and get involved. There are also various dating functions that are worth a shot if only to hone your skills at interviewing potential mates (and yes, that is part of the process.) I have friends who have found life partners and longterm SOs these ways. Most of all you just need to get out there and hang around with peeps.

p.s. me, I always found them at work. Or they found me. ;-)

39. Once you are consciously looking, you meet no one
The only way is to forget about it completely and live your life.

I followed that advice and met no one, but it usually works for most people. At least, if you by chance do meet no one, you know you were meant to be alone.
