I might have a kitty. Long story.
I don't know... there was an older kitten (a tween cat?) in my parking lot when I got home around 9:30 last night. We see our share of strays but this one is young and very friendly. Most of them are grown and seem to shy away from people.

I would have driven right past her if I'd been alone, but I had the kids with me so I slowed down and then stopped so they could see the pretty kitty (I always slow down so they can look at animals if I can). I just assumed it belonged to someone in the neighborhood. When I stopped, she immediately came towards the car, and that worried me so I told the girls to hop out and try to get her away from the car so I could park. After I parked I see the girls walking towards me with the kitty still following them, and bumping their legs with its head. Super sweet kitty. They petted it for a while then we left to go into the apartment, and it followed us but only as far as the foot of the stairs. So that reinforced my assumption that it was someone's kitty, because it was so friendly and didn't follow us right up the stairs.

So then this morning I get up and who's outside? Kitty. The girls saw her and immediately started in on me with the lobbying. Pointing out how little she is, that she probably doesn't have a home, that there are big stray cats out there who are mean and will beat her up, etc. Ay. I got a good look at her in the light, and she did seem very thin... so I took some cold cuts out there to see how she ate it. She's pretty tiny, but she ate a hell of a lot... and she ate it like it was the first meal she'd had in days... she was clearly ravenous and when we went to touch her she picked up the piece in her mouth and moved away like she thought we were trying to take it. That was the only time she ever moved away from us at all... other than that one incident, she only ever tried to get closer to us. I conceded to the girls that ok maybe she doesn't have a home, gave her a little water and discussed the possibility of taking her in with the kids.

And then a while later, when I watered my plants on the balcony, she must have been alarmed by the sound of the sliding door, cause she rocketed out from under my balcony and halfway up a tree trunk, looking around for predators in the saddest most panicky way. My heart just sank.

And then two hours later, as I'm leaving for work, she runs right up to me as I'm walking to the car. She must have been sitting there under that balcony the entire time. I just said 'hi kitty' and kept walking cause I didn't want her near the car again, but when I looked in my rear view mirror as I left I saw her still sitting there under that balcony.

So I'm asking all the cat lovers and knowers here... do the behaviors I mentioned above seem to indicate to you that she doesn't have a home? I don't want to take in someone's pet. But I am worried about such a small thing being out there alone. There are stray dogs in the neighborhood too... and a 45 mph street right by my apartment complex... and some people let their pet dogs roam loose, too.

What do you think? I'd be happy to give her a home if she needs one. I'm just not so sure she needs one... my plan for now is to get some kitty food and a pet dish for food and water, a litter box and some flea stuff. If she's not still there when I get home, well then hopefully someone else took her in. If she is, and you lot agree that she most likely does need a home... then I'll give her one.

2. Take kitty in, get pictures, put up "Found Kitty" signs in the neighborhood
You might have her for a few days, or she might have you forever! Either way, you did a good thing.

4. Oh yes... in fact I almost did that this morning.
But I didn't think of it till I was on the way to the car, and my cell phone memory was full. If I hadn't been running late (cause of kitty! :P), I'd have a pic to show y'all now. :)

3. Sounds like she had a home and got dumped
by people who didn't think she was cute anymore. Or they weren't taking very good care of her.
I vote to take her in.

We've had cats for years, and treat them very well, spoil them to be truthful, but a few years ago one of ours just left. We lived in an apartment complex, so not near any roads or anything where she could've gotten hit. And, a few weeks later, I swear I saw her in the window of one of our neighbors. We had just gotten 2 rescue kittens, so I assume she just got tired of living with us and the new furballs.

ETA--maybe this one wandered off, and is too young to know his/her way back home?

8. I much prefer your way of looking at it.
:)

I don't wanna buy a bunch of kitty stuff (okay it's not a bunch but still...) that I won't get any use out of when I find the owners.

And plus I will be sad to see her go. :( (Greedy, I know.)

But... it's worth it. :)

13. Our vet says that the myth of cats always finding their way home is just that -
a myth. If you think about it, it would make sense for young cats to have a bit of wanderlust. It would move them out into new territory while Mom raises a batch of new kittens.

If she has stuck around since last night, she wants to live with you. They pick their owners if it is their choice.

I've figured out why I so rapidly warmed up to the idea. I get lonely when the kids aren't with me... so kitty will be helping me, too... if she doesn't have a family come looking for her after the posters go up.

35. I think you would have seen flyers for the little kitty if she was someone's
beloved pet. I would be cautious making a "found" flyer, because there are a lot of creeps out there, but if you want to do due diligence, I would call your local vets and the humane society to see of someone reported her missing. After a few phone calls, I think you'll know that she is now a part of your family. I really am happy for you. I was adopted by a rescue, and he's the best thing that has happened to me. :-)

That's exactly how I ended up with Ruby, my cat, a year and a half ago. So, I hate to say, that cat is yours now. She picked you, just as Ruby picked me. Cats know who loves them and she's no exception.

Ruby when she first adopted me

Ruby a month ago, with her kitten Max, who's now 3 months old.

(I always slow down so they can look at animals if I can).

I do this too with my daughter; we see so few animals these days.

24. Aw... I'm sorry to hear that.
We live out in the sticks... so it's usually bunnies, armadillos, hares, possums, skunks, etc.

We still stop to look at doggies and kitties... but the cows and horses are 'eh' material now. :)

(there is no 'e' in armadillos and I usually forget but this time I remembered! :D)

25. I am in drought country 7k feet up, so animals are very sparse here.
I am also guilty of living in one of the most beautiful places in the country and not hiking/camping enough. Hiking and camping used to be my life. Now I am "a man" working all the time and loving up the fam...eh. It's all circular and i'll get back to it.

26. Face it, you've been adopted.
If this kitty does have an owner, he or she is quite negligent in letting her roam as she is doing; or she has been abandoned. There's no harm in putting up posters just to be sure someone isn't desperately searching for her, but I would think such an owner would have already put up "lost kitty" posters. I think you have a new kitty. :)

mostly grey / dark grey, but with orange on the end of her tail, and lightly mixed-in seemingly everywhere.

And she's got white circles around her eyes, and a white chin.
