2. Oh hell yeah!!
I think another great one is Billie Joe Armstrong. If Freddie Mercury and Charlie Chaplin had a love child the results would be Bille Joe Armstrong. Armstrong has that same personality that just draws all the audience into the concert to make the audience a part of that concert and not just watching it.

3. I saw Green Day years ago at a festival and yeah he did have a great
personality. They were a lot of fun!

But he obviously doesn't have the voice that Freddie did. :)

it'd look like Baba Booey.

My husband's going to see them when he's in London on business next week. He went to university with Thom's brother. I'm so glad it worked out this way, since I don't even have to say no - I won't be there! :D

9. Janesez hates Radiohead, so I put it there.
Although I don't think you could compare Thom Yorke and Freddie Mercury, because they had different styles.

30. That was my first thought...
...because face it, any singer who could succeed in the middle of the Townshend-Moon-Entwistle vortex would have to be a pretty amazing "frontman."

All due respect to Mercury, But I'd place Daltrey first and maybe Jagger second.

29. Queen is really a pop band rather than rock, to me.
More Broadway influences than anything else.

The best male rock front man was Jim Morrison of the Doors, best rock singer ever.

47. you need to listen to more of their non hits then
Queen has a LOT of rock songs. Actually, their first two or three albums were quite metal, and their career owes far more to rock, glam, and classical sources than to Broadway showtunes.

Listen to these and come back and let me know if this is Broadway:

And one of my all time favorite rock songs:

Also, check out some live shows - the older ones ('73-'75) preferably, but those are hard to find videos from.

Pure rock and roll. Don't get me wrong, I love the Doors and The Who and the Stones and a lot of other rock bands, but saying Queen is not rock is like saying it's not music. They helped define Stadium Rock, imo.

42. I think he was trying to make a point
It ain't about gender, it's about who's best at doing it. That's how I took it, but I could be wrong.

BTW, love your screen name. Did you take it from the song?

53. It was a semi-serious comment about language in general
There's no good gender-neutral equivalent for the phrase 'front man'. I guess you could say lead singer but being a rock God is about more than singing.

I do think the original question is a bit silly since rock is so subjective, that's what's great about it.

It would be easy enough to make a list of Great front men but how would you determine who the Greatest was?

The only fair way to do it would be to see all the rock legends live in their prime. Even if that was possible what are the odds that you could get decent seats?

You could go by record sales but that's problematic. The Eagles sold more records than anybody else but their leader Don Henley was a drummer, who spent most of his time at the back of the stage.

But he never had the voice that Freddie had. Freddie was the total package - showman, entertainer, vocalist.

46. I considered that
In his prime, especially, Freddie had amazing pipes — and it wasn't just about pipes, it was also style; he became what he sang. I always think of how he moved from the grit of "Get Down, Make Love" to "Bring Back Leroy Brown," which had the feel of the '30s, to "My Melancholy Blues," which was so sweet it made your teeth rot.

I just decided to make my choice — or, non-choice — on equal footing, without penalizing Jagger for something he couldn't control. Voices are nature-made.

In terms of commanding a crowd, they were equal, in my estimation.

51. it is all personal taste
I never cared for Freddie, myself. Overly theatrical, to me, one of the negative directions rock went. I like more stripped down, straight-ahead rock.

Like Mick and the Stones, who are simply a vastly more important band than anyone but the Beatles.

If we're going to stick to pure rock bands then I'll agree with you, and also give props to David Lee Roth who, even though he's a clown of epic proportions, was a hell of a frontman in VH's heyday.
