Question: Is AOL working for you guys?
Edited on Thu Jun-19-08 09:29 AM by tblue37
I have a free AOL account, but I have not been able to access AOL at all for the past two days. I get this message when I try:
The service you are trying to reach is temporarily unavailable - please try your request again. . . .
Does anyone here know whether problem is with my computer or with AOL?

1. You may be the last person to use AOL on earth.

I started on AOL many years ago, and it seemed too much trouble to shift all my addresses and such. But AOL has been a pain in the butt for a long time. It's just that I am not computer savvy, so I didn't know how to migrate my address book to my Gmail accounts or to my Yahoo, Hotmail, Go-Daddy, and KU accounts.

Anyway, a few of my regular correspondents still use my AOL account, and I hate that I can't get at it at all now.

11. Okay, let's get you off of there.
That way we can all stop making fun of you. :)

I just looked through several how-to's, and this seems the most straightforward. Go do this as soon as you can get back into AOL, and come back and ask if you have any questions. You can PM me if you don't feel like opening yourself up to abuse.

Use the first option at that link. Good luck!

5. If you're going to hell anyway, you might as well enjoy the trip.
But seriously, I do know plenty of people who use AOL, most of them having done so for years. Some people just like sticking with what they know.

13. I have had AOL for years.
I tried several less expensive ISPs, but they just didn't seem to work as well as AOL.

10. AOL was *made* broken
With the exception of following a few "DU this AOL poll" links, I haven't gone near it in a couple of years. It's fucked up my computer too many times. And that includes the bastard child AIM, which is missing a few chromosomes.

I just wanted to know if the problem was with my computer or with AOL. This sounds like it could be an AOL problem, then. I was getting ready to go hunting for someone to let me use his or her computer to try accessing AOL on it.

Some of the comments about AOL on this thread were actually quite amusing (especially the one about the stone tablets), but I really was looking for needed information, not comedy routines.

others were having the same problem. Every message board I went to, when someone asked about problems with AOL, the person got the same smart ass responses--and no help. I still have no idea whether AOL is down or my computer is having a problem. It sure would be nice to know, but I don't know where to go to find out. Meanwhile, I don't know if people are trying to contact me through my AOL accoutn, and that really bites.

20. As I explained above, I have a number of different email addresses
that I use for different things. When I abandoned my paid AOL account, I kept the free one, because I had an extensive address book, and a number of people knew me by that address. I am not computer savvy enough to feel that I could easily migrate all that info to a different account. I have accounts on Hotmail, Yahoo, Gmail, and Go-Daddy, as well as one on my university's server.

A couple of my tutoring students use my AOL account to contact me, as do some of my online friends whom I "met" many years ago, when AOL was still sort of state of the art.

I did finally manage a workaround that allowed me to access my AOL account, though. I went to their help page, logged in, and then used some of the links on that page to get into my account. Having finally gotten into my AOL account by that route, I can now access the AOL homepage by way of my bookmark. For two days there, I got nothing but a blank screen with an error message whenever I tried to use my bookmark to go to AOL or whenever I tried to use the Google link for the AOL homepage.

21. I have an AOL account, and everything's working.
I've had it for twelve years or so. I'm getting and sending e-mail just fine.

I'm not apologetic. What's to apologize for? It's just an e-mail service.

28. one of the funniest nights of my Internet life...
...was the night in FSZ when I started "reading" to the room out of my classic copy of the Unexpurgated Kama Sutra. Rd was there, for one. I laughed sooooo hard. I'll never forget it.

I was able to access it last night by doing a workaround through their help page, but today I can't access it again, so I am going to have to try what I did last night abd hope for te ebst.
