Pet Peeve: People saying, "What?"

In RL, when people didn't catch what you said, and say, "What?"

People, that is so tacky! Can't they say something with a little more politeness? "What did you say?",
or "Excuse me?" or something.

Unless the speaker is very young, I just find this tacky, especially in a work or professional situation.

I have a friend who does the same thing all the time and it drives me NUTS. I swear she hears me correctly, but just wants me to repeat what I said b/c she's power-tripping.

Of course, I'm probably completely wrong about that, but it still drives me crazy. :crazy:

13. Sometimes I ask people to repeat themselves

and then I realize I did hear them, there was just some kind of disconnect between my ears and my brain and it took a minute to sink in, I'm really not on a power trip.

I suspect how you describe it is exactly what happens with my friend, too. I've noticed she processes things a bit more slowly than I do, and I sometimes get impatient with her responses....which really isn't fair to her....it's just her own unique way of being.

I basically need to remember to be more patient and compassionate with people sometimes, and not assume that everyone thinks as quickly as I do...which isn't, in any way, to say my way is "better than", or theirs is "worse than".

We're ALL on our own perfect schedules. :D

My pet peeve is saying "oh" instead of "zero". It's a number, not a letter.

18. It's a professional oddity, but...

at work we have to say "recall" (being a barista means calling drinks, that in-turn requires a stable common language and terminology). It's infected my subconscious and I say it constantly and without any thought. I also say "venti" and "grande" instead of "large" and "medium" with some frequency.

I usually say I'm sorry I didn't catch what you said. What's awful is when it's repeated and I still don't hear it clearly.

22. I've had people say what/huh when I know they heard me

It is like a habit with some people.

After about 3-4 times I usually say, "How the hell can you respond to what I said after saying "what" unless you heard me, dumbass!"

In Texas you hear a lot of , "Do what?" or "Do what, now?" when someone wants you to repeat what you've said.

It comes out, "Dew Whaaaht?", and it stirs homicidal rage in me every time I hear it.
