10. My Chihuahua....

you would think it weighed 150 pounds...she could be a little beast..she is very good with us, and even with most visitors but she is very protective of the family. She barks like crazy when someone knocks on the door. It's one of the few times she ever barks.

Also, when we take her to the park and there are other dogs around she runs after them and tries to attack them. She thinks she is so tough but she's not. :)

Last year we almost lost our big old Lab and we had a harrowing ride down the highway to the nearest emergency animal hospital. My guy had to be wheeled in and, while I was able to keep control of my emotions for the drive etc. as soon as they wheeled him away from me, I lost it.

I'm in a rather sizeable waiting room with probably 15 - 20 other cat and dog owners waiting with their pets and when I started to cry, you could sense the tension in the room. People looked down, looked away, shuffled their feet. Trying to compose myself, I went and sat down across from this big old Rottie. He was the biggest dog I'd ever seen (owner later said 175 lbs!) and he was obviously there because he wasn't feeling good.

Still, when I sat down with my face in my hands, this poor, sick old dog lumbered to his feet and came over to me where he promptly, and gently, laid his head in my lap. He stayed there for what seemed a very long time to me, letting me kiss him and cry on his head.

Labs will always and forever be the love of my life but Rotties hold a very special second place in my heart.

FTR, my dog and "Monster" (yes, that was the Rottweiler's name) both pulled through that ordeal. Sadly, I lost my Beau at the age of 14 this past May.

I've only known one dachshund and he was a cranky old bastard that belonged to our neighbors when I was a kid. He was snappy but also not-neutered (and I remember this because his balls dragged on the ground and I always figured that couldn't feel so good).

I think any dog has the potential to be mean depending on how it has been treated in its life. Clearly there are some dogs who are gentle as lambs even if they've been treated horribly and I also think there are probably dogs that are mean despite being treated well. It's a personality thing and I don't think it's fair to always blame the owner if a dog turns out to have a bad disposition. You see the same thing in people -- good parents who end up with a rotten kid (admittedly I think this is pretty rare) or awful parents who luck out and end up with a great kid. Dogs aren't really that different. Part base personality/genetic and part environment.

Campground neighbor had the barky little thing, let it go and it attacked a bull mastiff being walked on a leash in the middle of the lane. We thought the mastiff would kill it, but then it grabbed the little dog in it's mouth and tossed it over in the grass. I have only been bitten by a dacshound, a chihuahua and a MinPin and I think in each case it was out of nervousness.

26. One of them was responsible for my neighbor's father's ER visit.

I don't know how bad it was, the neighbor told me his leg was pretty bloody and IIRC, he needed stitches. Her father made the mistake of opening their door and walking in. Even though he knew the dogs, they didn't like it. They have several "dashhounds"(that's what they call them) and personally I sure wouldn't attempt to go over there anymore. Last time I was there, they only had one or two back then, and all I did was look down so I wouldn't step on it and the darn thing folded back it's lips and did a vicious snarl growl, looked like a friggin Cujo.

Another neighbor's jack russel is the same way. It's one thing to be bit on the hand or leg, but I'd be sitting down on the ground weeding when he'd pay me a visit. He was fine as long as I didn't pay any attention to him..don't look at him, don't pet him, don't talk to him and hope to God your being on the ground didn't piss him off.

My parents' shiba is a very persuasive character. He's twenty pounds of pure attention-getting dominance. He can figure out how light switches and how the central air and fan basically work, so he's already got the rudimentary intelligence for world take-over. He's mostly stalled by being a smidge under knee-high, and not being able to master spoken language, but I am convinced his English comprehension is pretty high.

He's "misunderestimated" because he looks like a stuffed animal. But when I visit their house, from the time I get there, I am under his "paw" so to speak--he jumps me right away, makes me play with him, and mugs about a third of my lunch. He's a nifty little shake-down artist.

My folks aptly named him "Buster" (AKC name Sir Buster of Stones. He's a bluecollar pedigree.)

That said, I had a Pug/Sharpei mix at one time (yeah, she was a funny looking little thing) and she was okay with humans but with other dogs, she was horrible. You can breed for temperment and a lot of the smaller breeds had their aggression tolerated. They can't get to your throat unless you lay down. But most larger breeds had the aggression bred out because they had greater potential to do harm. All dogs descended from wolves and the only ones that humans tolerated were the ones who we could co-exist with on at least a semi-peaceful manner. Many breeds have also been bred to be puppyish indefinitely.

I can attest to the fact that small dogs are the worst, probably because they are so unassuming. I never cared much for cocker spaniels, either. As far as large dogs go, most were very sweet, except for one German Shepherd on my route that had elderly owners that pretty much didn't socialize him.

But I love my cats so much more. Cats for the most part aren't overtly aggressive, though I've had a couple of incidents over the years with a cat going psycho on me.

As for dogs, I've noticed that most small dogs have an attitude problem. I know a pom who would go after a horse. It's interesting looking at different ones, and realizing in another age that poodles were once guard dogs, and I'm sure other small dogs have done similar tasks. There are obviously more big dogs bred for security purposes, but it's really the small dogs who can make you think they're big.

One of the dogs up the block was attacked by another neighbor's mixed breed a few weeks ago while he was taking a dump. The attacking dog broke through a locked screen door, bit the neighbor's dog around the lower gut area tothe point he needed emergency surgery ( over $1500).
I don't know what breeds went into this attacking dog, but he is able to jump as high as the top of our fence and he really bothers me when he is out.
