Name up to 10 favorite indie music artists
Edited on Sun Jul-13-08 02:26 PM by mvd
By indie, I just mean not part of the mainstream music scene. You don't see big sales or hear them on the radio much.

10 of mine:

The Pierces
Tilly And The Wall
Rilo Kiley
Belle & Sebastian
Aimee Mann
Kay Hanley
Nina Gordon solo
New Pornographers
Brandi Carlile
Cindy Alexander

There are others equal, but this is a good sample. A Fine Frenzy is a fave of mine, but probably gets too much attention to be here.

The Marked Men

The Horrors

Of course I could go on and on and on, haha.

3. F'sho, they are both outstanding.
"Aly, Walk With Me" by The Raveonettes is one of my recent song addictions, haha.

9. 10 of my favorites
Tullycraft
Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin
The Weakerthans
The Thermals
Unbunny
Capstan Shafts
The Fruit Bats
Fishboy
Dressy Bessy
Silver Jews

Tilly and the Wall is great. Have you heard their new one? Not quite as good as Bottoms of Barrels, but it's growing on me.

o became equal after a few listens. I'm sure it will make my best-of-the-year list. It's a bit more rock oriented, but they also do that well.

13. Great list!
I'm not crazy about Joanna, but love the others there that I know about. The Shins are close, but could go here IMO.

20. Thanks for saying it's a great list
I know a lot of people can be annoyed by Joanna's voice, but I just love her "Ys" album.

14. When you say "indie", what exactly do you mean?
Edited on Sun Jul-13-08 06:52 PM by Bluzmann57
Because damn near every Blues band is "indie" in that they are not major label artists. Alligator, Blind Pig, Ruf, and a few others are the main outlets for the music I love. They are not Warner Bros., RCA, or any other gigantic mega labels nor will they ever be. That being said, check out Devil in a Woodpile. A band from Chicago with ties to Jeff Tweety.

15. Great idea for a thread
Ralph Myerz & the Jack Herren Band
The Dining Rooms
Grouse
Caia
Millenia Nova
Micatone
OHN
The Crystal Method
DJ Krush
Jonathan Coulton

With the exception of a handful of stateside acts, I'm really in love with European stuff these days. There's so much great music over there that gets very little play in the US. Thank god for internet radio. All the corporate radio where I live is teh suck.
