Why did they call them the Golden Girls?

Really, I don't get it. They make these girls out like they're really old and when I was younger, I pretty much thought they were. Then I found out they were all in their mid-50s and I thought, this ain't golden. They're not old. They're not old enough to say they're living in their "golden years". Unless it's an 80s thing, but my mother is 58 and she seems younger and more active than the entire Golden Gang (well except for Blanche, but then again, I don't even think a girl in her 20s is that active).
