I'm probably certifiable.
Yesterday, we took out the inflatable water slide from the garage. Upon opening it up, there was a nest of newly born mice inside. Little tiny, pink, hairless, defenseless babies. I could see their little hearts beating through their skin. We gathered them up (gloved) with the rest of the nesting materials and put them in an old wooden hamster house roughly near where the water slide had been in the garage. I was afraid to look out there this morning. But they were removed and hidden away sometime by their momma (hopefully).

I know, I'm a nutjob. I know they will most likely try to get into the walls of the house this winter. I know they carry disease. I know. I know. I know. I just couldn't kill them or let them waste away in the woods. Besides, deer mice are adorable. :P

Just call me the crazy mouse lady.

:silly:

1. You are not crazy at all.
You sure made some work for mamma mouse though.

We had all sorts of rodents as pets growing up. One of our neighbors now has numerous fruit trees, which he doesn’t tend to, so there is fruit all over the ground. That fruit draws rodents, so the neighbor then poisons them, right, and he isn’t even a repug. Otherwise, I like the guy, but damn.

2. I know how you feel.
It's bad enough that they're cute, but babies? I couldn't kill them, either.

Their eyes weren't even open yet. I couldn't do it.

3. You done good...
I would have done the same thing.

A few summers ago, there were 3 baby birds laying under a nest, on the ground, still alive near my house. They were Cedar Waxwings I later found out. Mom was laying dead a few feet away...looked like a cat got to her.

I made a little nest in a cardboard box and placed them inside.

I made a few phone calls and found a wildlife rehabilitator about 20 miles from me who agreed to take them.

I brought them to her...she had a ton of birds there.

I called her about a month later...the birds made it and were released into nature!

You are not crazy...you have a very good heart and did a wonderful thing.

4. In the Circle of Life
it would be okay to move them a considerable distance from your house in a wooded area and let the chips of nature fall where they may.

15. I assume Momma took them
The nest was disturbed a bit and babies were all gone. There was no sign of carnage and I put it where the dogs couldn't get at it. I saw a trail of mouse droppings near it too, so I'm sure Momma found them and moved them all elsewhere.

7. Had one running around our house a few months back.
My grandpa wanted to set traps and poison and whatnot, but I just caught the little guy and set him loose a ways away from the house.

17. So far the rodents in my garage have cost me $200+ in washer repairs.
If I catch any of them they're DOA-guaranteed.

20. Awww sorry to hear that
Years ago, one got into the vents in my van and made a nest. It must have chewed through some wires because my vents never worked right since.

Heh. I have so much crap in there. They grow up quickly, so hopefully they will move on soon.
