Does anyone else prefer studio music to live versions?

Maybe I'm going against the grain here, but I like studio versions of music. I like the full orchestration, that sound being right there in your ears, etc. Maybe that's why I'm not a concert person.

Screaming crowds and muffled sounds don't do much to me, either on an album or in person.

Although the Violent Femmes sure were loud at their concert.

Sometimes it's fun to hear a band do a slightly different take on their songs, but otherwise I'd rather play the CD.

4. Yes, because a record can be an artistic statement in itself

With artists that know how to properly use a studio, a recording could be made that would be extremely difficult to replicate exactly live - which is why it can hold up as a unique artistic creation in its own right.

for me, though, I like the more organic live experience. Which isn't saying that all concerts are good- I've been to some stinkers, too.

6. Depends. Some bands do well live, some don't.

Some do better when they're able to be in a controlled environment like a studio.

Some bands aren't as good live... some make their music come alive.

8. Depends. For jazz--I really enjoy live recordings

The music is designed for improvising and interaction with the crowd. And they're usually well recorded. (Although, in the case of Keith Jarrett, they ought to keep the mike a long way from hisw pie-hole.) Especially if it's a smokin' session. But for most others, I prefer a studio recording. Some engineering is just incredible.

had to be live because the studio albums never really captured any energy. My sister went to an Eagles concert back in the 70's and she said they played a certain album note for note and she felt like she should have stayed home and played the album.

I go to small Irish/Scottish bands quite often and enjoy both the recordings and the live stuff because there is usually improvisation live that is really good. A turn of phrase or different note here or there makes it more interesting for me anyway.

and that's really about it.

12. Most concerts I have been to have been pretty disapponting compared to the records.

Rolling Stones at the Kingdome in Seattle, Oct. 1981 was a perfect example. The sound was terrible and echoed and had a tinny quality - I should have just stayed home and listened to the records again. Even Joni Mitchell wasn't as good in person because the delicateness of the recordings was lost in a big concert hall. About the only one that I can recall which sounded just as good in person was Neil Young.

15. I love seeing shows, but don't like live recordings.

I'll take the studio versions 99% of the time. But the energy and vibes of seeing a show can't be beat either. A live show to me is more than just the songs and how they do them.
