Poll question: Junie B. Jones: Satan's Child?

My daughter has started reading the Junie B. Jones books. They are books about a kindergartener then first-grader (named Junie B. Jones) told from Junie B.'s perspective. Junie B. is an all-around brat and troublemaker, but the kids seem to love the books. When my daughter reads them to me, I do try to explain to her that Junie B. is pretty naughty... however, a guy I know says his wife won't allow the Junie B. Jones books in the house for his kids because she is such a bad influence.

What say you?

Junie B. Jones books has way more to worry about then Junie B. Jones. My daughter loved those books and as far as i know she hasn't killed or dismembered anyone yet, of course she's only 13 so you may want to get back to me in a few years.

Of course, my Daughter then moved on to Captain Underpants.......

Junie is this generation's Ramona and what a silly woman to ban a book like that. They are, in a way, teachable. Boo hiss on the book banners.

We should be so lucky to have kids emulate the behavior of characters in *books*. :)

On the other hand, it could be that your pointing out to her that Junie's behavior isn't acceptible makes the books that much more appealing for your daughter.

5. I loved most of the Junie books

Really enjoyed reading them with my daughter.

Junie was pretty wild, and that added to her appeal.

6. My kid loved them.

I didn't think they were all that bad--in fact there is a very real humor at work there that is missing in most books for that age group. I will tell you that my kid WANTED to read that series and that by itself is a good thing if you want to promote the idea of reading for fun.

10. I'm not that familiar with the books

but I think kids should read about all types of people, not just the ones we want them to emulate. If I had kids I would let them read the books but would explain not to copy the bad grammar and that Junie's behavior is nowhere near perfect. It's actually good in a way that they learn to recognize questionable/bad behavior.

If you work at it books like Junie B. Jones can be "gateway drugs" so to speak for say Roald Dahl's "Matilda," and other such books.

21. My 6 year old is devouring the books now....

In 3 months she's gone through all the kindergarten ones and just started on the first grade ones. I honestly don't care what's in them, I'm just happy she loves reading and hopeful it will lead her to other books she loves.
