Another trick is to take a small face towel, wet it, then microwave it in a tupperware dish for about a minute until it's steamy. That can also help.

Icing my back usually does wonders after strenuous excercise, like running from the cops when I'm drunk.

My chiropractor once told me, if I ever feel any discomfort in my back, to ice it. He said if everyone iced their backs, he'd be out of a job. If it's a knot, I've been told cold to hot compresses work the best.
