Would you please send a kind thought to Philboy the dog?
Thank you in advance.

Poor guy has been puking since 1 am. When it turned bloody, I called the emergency vet. She said that when dogs vomit violently, they can commonly rupture blood vessels in their esophagus. Also, he had the runs so bad that I had to give him a bath.

He's laying on a blanket on the floor by my feet now. I'm going to try to get a few hours sleep soon, and then get him in to his regular vet.

9. Thank you all...
I just got home from the vet's office. The local emergency vet on call works at an office that is not where I normally take him, so I met her there after getting her out of bed. He got some meds on board, and I will bring him back at 8 am for blood work and tests. I could not leave him because they have no overnight staff.

His vitals are good. No fever, gum color is good, no stomach tenderness.

He got IV fluids to re-hydrate, a Pepcid AC injection, an anti-vomiting drug injection, and an oral liquid medication that coats and attempts to heal any ulcers, etc.

He seems to be feeling better...the cause of this could be anything, hence the blood work later in the morning.

Thanks for your well wishes.

He's my baby... I love him.

24. UPDATE
Philboy the dog started bleeding quite badly from his rectum, as well as continuing to puke blood.

I wrapped him up in a towel, rushed him to the vet, and waited until 8 am for the vet to arrive.

He will be in the hospital until at least tomorrow...he is on IV fluids.

They re running tests now...but the vet is quite certain it is:

HGE (at least in terms of veterinary medicine) stands for Hemorrhagic GastroEnteritis, and it is a disease of dogs. In human medicine, HGE commonly stands for Human Granulocytic Ehrlichia (HGE). Click here to learn more about the human HGE disease. The remainder of this Q & A is in reference to the dog version of HGE.

Assuming this is what the problem is, he should be ok in a few days.

40. UPDATE #2 - thanks to all who I did not thank individually...
I am FINALLY going to bed soon hopefully.

Turns out he does indeed have HGE, and he will probably be alright.

It is kind of interesting how they hone in on the diagnosis. They look at the dog's red blood cell count. You would intuitively expect it to be much lower because of the severe bleeding. However, with HGE, the red count actually increases because since the dog becomes so dehydrated from the runs, the blood becomes more concentrated. There is some kind of metric that they use to determine that the red count "balance" is probably caused by HGE.

So, philboy the dog is resting comfortably, and is not fussing with his IV.

They are giving him B vitamins, as well as that medicine that coats his intestines, every few hours.

The vet called and said he is doing well, just sitting in his cage and watching the people work.

She said I could come to see him later, and that he should be able to come home tomorrow.

Thanks again, everyone, for the well wishes.

58. UPDATE #3 - A sincere thanks to those who responded since last update
I went to see him earlier this evening. He was hooked to an IV. I stayed with him for about an hour. He fell asleep in my arms.

Phil was a little washed out, but his eyes were brighter, and he wagged his tail a lot.

The Vet also called me a little while ago and said that he took a very small amount of food and was able to keep it down.

He has had one bout of bloody diarrhea since I saw him, but she said that it normally takes 24 hours to resolve.

Assuming he continues to progress, he should be able to come home tomorrow night. :hi:

70. FINAL UPDATE
Phil is home.

He looks good.

His vomiting has ceased, and he is eating.

He still has the runs slightly, but the Vet said that should resolve by tomorrow.

There is no more bleeding, out of either end.

A sincere thank you for the well wishes...I believe that they helped him in some way.
