When did a football field become a standard of measurement?
I don't get it--anything large is measured not in feet or yards, but "as big as (two, three, ten) football fields." WHY? And since when?

1. It's a visual aid. Few people can picture 100 yards, it's just an abstract measurement
however most people can relate to the length of a football field.

2. I'm not a football fan, so it's lost on me
I couldn't visualize two or three football fields if you paid me! :D

6. Wait, wait...that's a football term, right?
I think I've heard that somewhere...maybe when my dad was watching "da Bills" on the TEEvee way back when...

7. Because if you take off the end zones, it's about an acre.
And very few people know what an acre is any more. A lot more know about football fields. :)
