This new ratings system...
I don't know...

I'll give it some time, though...

I am rarely eloquent enough to get to the Greatest Page...

And you might as well not rate the Lounge threads...

No Greatest Page for them, according to Skinner.

That might change, and it might not...

Maybe I'm just tired.

12. I'm rating this super-dilly-must-read awesomeness!
Edited on Wed Sep-24-08 03:40 AM by CreekDog
anyone who rated your thread skip it, well, damn their oily hides!!!

(i must admit to liking the system, however. though there shouldn't be two colors for each category, like the gray "must read" and green "must read".)

10. It'll work out... it's growing on me anyway...
Personally if we could sort out the threads by "must read" in the big forums then that would be good IMO.

At the end of the day it's change. I think that the system will get gamed, just like it did in the past, people pressing "recommend" instead they'll automatically press "must read". then you'll get the narrowminded people who will do the "skip it" option...

All we can do is give it time, see how it works. I think this one may well just work.

We're blessed with people who care about this site. The "other side", you know, them... their site is well hard to navigate, not intuitive, not easy to read or follow.

Mark.

11. I don't get it.
Edited on Wed Sep-24-08 02:24 AM by cwydro
Can someone explain it to me?

Are we rating the threads now or are the mods putting those signs beside the thread? Haven't been here lately, so maybe I missed the explanation or something.

Edit: I found the explanation. I don't know, I don't think I like it. Too much potential for abuse.

15. Everything I post is "MUST READ," so really the rating system is superfluous.
Just sayin'.

17. I don't really like it.
It's kind of annoying, and screws up on the pages b/c it like double spaces threads they get Rec'd. It's driving me a bit crazy right now.
But I will probably get used to it.

19. Me either, because a thread can go from recommended to average
in just a few clicks. If the purpose was to make the 'must reads' easier to find, I'm not seeing it.

20. Plus, I feel it's going to turn into a monster.
People are just going to rec things, good and bad, just for the pure sake of it. I've already seen a few that got rated "Skip", and I am sure some DUers, who don't really care for a particular member, will abuse this system, and others will get rec'd high just b/c they are "popular". I think, in the Lounge anyway, it may turn out to be a disaster.

I was quite content with the old Rec system. It was all nice and neat.

21. In all honesty, I think it will be worse in the serious forums.
I think the lounge will get bored with it, but I can see disruptors rating threads in a contrary way to what real DUers might think about a particular subject.

In the same manner that disruptors recommended disruptive threads, they'll now be able to rate them down to 'Skip It' or up to 'Must Read'.

I think it will just clutter up the serious forums and make it harder to find the thoughtful and interesting threads.

23. Do we really need another way to publically be assholes to each other?
"skip it" and "disruptive"? isn't the whole purpose of mods to lock disruptive threads? and I think I can decide for myself if "Britney joins the ice-capades" is a "must read".

can we at least move the icons to where they're less obtrusive?

18. Recommended, must read, blah, blah blah. Who gives a shit?
It is like "DUing a poll".

Meaningless popularity contests. Who says what is on the greatest page is really great? Or does it simply fulfill some reader's bias?

22. I do NOT like the new rating system CP
There are a few DUers who write wonderful things-Nance Greggs and Will Pitt come to mind. On the other end of the DU membership spectrum are those like me who often struggle to write stuff worth reading but we post away anyway. This new system actually discourages these 'far less than brilliant' writers. How many "skip it"s will we get before we stop posting entirely?

Also, how long will it take for freepers to get in here and start freeping the ratings? (It will be a game for 'em real soon mark my words!)

I know that Skinner has the best intentions with this, at first I liked it but on further thinking: NO, I don't like this system at all.

24. They did something similar with another message board I used to post at.
They called it "Karma" and if you liked a post you could give a poster "good karma" and if you didn't like the post you could give it "bad karma".

I always was polite and gave my posts a lot of good thought. Hence, I got lots of "good karma."

Unfortunately, after I let one of my political opinions slip, someone took umbrage and "karma bombed" me with lots of bad karma. So all of a sudden I looked like a big ol' a-hole. It kind of ruined me on that message board.

25. I have seen other forums use ratings systems
some work others don't. The one thing I don't like about DU's system is that it's too intrusive. A rating system should be subdued, they should have gone with stars or numbers.

What I really don't like about this system here is it totally screws up the greatest page. I liked being able to review greatest threads by time, and now that's gone.
