Poll question: Do you use a CPAP/BiPAP machine?
Edited on Mon Nov-24-08 01:17 PM by Bertha Venation
For those who've never heard of these things, they are machines to help one breathe better while sleeping. I use CPAP - continuous (something) air pressure - so that I don't snore and the sleep apnea doesn't get the better of me. Not sure what BiPAP is but I know it's similar.

PS I know I've done this survey before, but I don't remember the results and I'm curious. Still. Again. Whatever.

1. Yes - CPAP

I'm not sure how much my system agrees with it, but I'm using it for now since apnea was found. Might try BiPAP or a dental appliance.

2. I don't use one, but a good friend does.
A prolonged bout of depression and medications that wouldn't work sent him to look for other help. His therapist suggested a sleep study, and they told him afterward that he may not have gotten a single good night of sleep his entire adult life.

He tried the CPAP and says it saved his sanity.

3. BIPAP_, and it's done wonders for me.
I have severe apnea and it's probably saved my life.

4. I probably will in the future
I'll probably be using a BiPAP machine. Bi-level positive airway pressure. A lower setting is often used when exhaling because, with ALS, the diaphragm doesn't have enough strength to exhale against the pressure of a CPAP. at the moment my breathing is fine, my diaphragm is strong but there's no telling how long that will last.

5. I said other. DH just finished his 2nd sleep test on Friday night.
He's supposed to get a machine, I don't know what kind. He has a respiratory interruption ever 2 minutes or so.

My daughter's 30 yr old coworker just got his machine last week. He has an interruption every 30 seconds! :wow:

7. Just started using one. Apnea has a correlation to insulin resistance.
I am on a full face mask cpap. It definitely takes getting used to. I keep pulling it off in the middle of the night. I can't really tell if it is helping or not.

I was having apnea episodes about 30 times per hour.

10. I still take it off in my sleep. I've been using it for more than 6 months.
I think that eventually you'll stop taking it off, or at least do so less often. Mrs. V. wakes me when I take it off - because I wake her with snoring.

9. CPAP at setting 13 here
HUGE difference in my life. I don't like to lie down without it now - might fall asleep and wake up choking with major headache. How did I manage until I got mine? I snored since I was a skinny little kid, knew the second I read the definition of apnea I had it, - falling a sleeep constantly - like 5 or 6 times a day - having to stop and get out to wake up every 45 minutes when driving - burnt out ALL the time. I waited two years to get into a study (no insurance so I sold myself for scientific experiments - ha), then 9 months to get on real pressure (was in the darn placebo group - I could tell because I just knew when I was finally put on my correct setting it was going to me so much better and it was!)
