2. He is annoying
whether I'm watching him or not. His annoyingness is independent of my viewership.

Also, chill out.

11. I did not mean to come on that strong. sorry
I meant it as a general slap to TV watching. Not specifically at you. But, of course, in my own, clod-like Boatswain Mate way, I did not make that clear.

4. I remember him playing for Portland back in the '70s
He had long hair and wore a headband, and a lot of wingnuts hated him, IIRC.

5. It is hard for me to get worked up over a guy who
blew off practice to go see a Dead show. Seems to me he has his priorities in order.

6. In my book.
In my book, that IS priorities. Practice will happen again, but we're talking about the DEAD, man.

9. I agree
As we all found out, there were unfortunately only a limited number of Dead shows in the universe and every one was precious.

I haven't be able to bring myself to see the post Jerry Dead. I can't imagine it would be quite the same.

10. Have you heard
about http://www.thesportsrag.com/008_Bill_Walton.html">this?

Bristol, CT -- In a confidential memo leaked to the press Tuesday morning, executives at ESPN expressed growing concern about incessant references to legendary counterculture rock band, the Grateful Dead, made by NBA analyst and lifelong "Deadhead," Bill Walton.

"If we could all make an effort to help Bill reduce the number of references to Grateful Dead lyrics, concerts he's attended, and past and present band members throughout an average broadcast," the memo said, "it would go a long way toward bringing more viewers to Fridays ."

"Seriously, I’m not kidding here," the memo continued, "it’s got to stop. Before we all gouge our own eyes out with sporks."

...

"If he tells me one more time how he did mescaline with Mama Cass and David Crosby backstage at the Greek Theater, Berkeley, ’71, I’m gong to smack him," said Walton’s broadcast partner, Mike Tirico. "And that’s exactly how he always says it, too: ‘Greek Theater…Berkeley….seventy-one…,’ and then he starts grinning and grooving to some Dead music in his head, going, ‘Yeaaaah, man….yeaaaah’ like a total stoner."

Okay, so it's fake, but it COULD be real. :)

15. I don't know...
...I want to remember them as they were and not have those memories cheapened by some sub par version of the boys. I'm glad you enjoyed the shows and I have to admit every summer I get the urge to see them but I think I will pass.

PS Sorry for the thread jacking NicoleM

8. He's not bashing my team.
He's sucking up to Garnett almost as hard as he sucks up to Shaq. It's what he does. He just does it in a really, really annoying way. :)

17. Once I was watching a game (years ago)
and he said (about Scottie Pippen, if I remember right):

"WHAT'S HE DOING? Good defenders can't be flopping around under the basket!"

The other commentator said in a hesitant, are-you-fucking-drunk-or-just-stupid-or-is-this-a-joke kind of bewildered voice: "Weeeeeell, Bill, I always thought that drawing fouls was part of good defense."

They went almost immediately to a commercial.

The guy reminds me of whistle-ass. I know nothing of his politics, but they both seem to be serious intellectual lightweights. Maybe he's not, but he comes across that way.

14. I can't look at Walton without thinking about Patty Hearst
I believe that was the same year Portland won it all.
