Any adults here have braces/orthodontics?

Owch! I just got braces (at age 36) and they hurt like a bad Western! Anyone else here feel my pain?

2. Me!!!!!!!

I've had the @$@#@$ things for a little over a year now. I still have quite a ways to go, so I don't know how much longer I'll have them on.
My kids have 'em on, too, but I'm usually the only one that has to take something for the pain. Adult teeth DO NOT volunteer to move easily!

3. My husband and I had them at the same time.

I got them when I was 40. They were very painful for a couple of weeks, but not bad at all after. Had them about 2 yrs. I can't say I really feel your pain, but I'm at the age I have plenty of my own. Hope you soon start feeling better.

4. My husband just got his braces off

Thursday....on his 60th birthday! He got them put on 5 years ago. The day after he got his braces, we left for a three week trip to the mountains in Montana. This will always be affectionately remembered by our family as the "Trip from Hell"...or "Why didn't we throw Daddy off the mountain". I feel your pain. Keep rinsing with Peroxidil, or warm salt water. Keep an ice bag handy, just in case. Give it a week or two, and things should be much better. Keep the faith....(and a bottle of advil handy)..it's well worth it in the end. :) :)

6. "Throw dad off the mountain" LOL!!!!

The worst time we all 3 had was when they put the spacers in, before the brackets or anything. I thought we were going to kill each other before we had enough sense to get medicated. For some reason, after that day, my husband will always ask if it's safe to come home, if he knows we've been to the ortho. :)

5. Get a waterpik thingy to get the debris out; also helps your gums feel

better. :)

7. Thanks for the tips...

I have had the top set on for a month now, but just had the bottom set installed on Thursday. They hurt like all-get-out because my lower teeth have always been an ivory trainwreck. Lots of Motrin, and some delightful Canadian-only over the counter pain killers ;) .

I only need the wire-style braces for a few (3-6) months, and then it's 2-3 years of these:

But, by golly, the worst thing about these isn't the pain, but the paranoia about having something really gross and obvious stuck in them in public!

8. I Recently Had Orthodontics

I had orthodontics put in my mouth when I was 45 years old (I am now 52). It was something my mother offered to pay for for me, and I accepted; my teeth were very crooked and misaligned.

Immediately after they were put in, they were very awkward and I pretty much couldn't eat solid food for a few days; afterwards I got used to them.

I had them in for 3 1/2 years (February 1996 to July 1999), and my teeth are aligned now; my mouth looks and feels so much better. I feel it was well worth it.

I now wear a retainer when I go to bed at night, or am supposed to; I do not always put it on. I can tell that I need it since I can feel the pressure when I put it on after I have not had it on in a while.

9. Gotta wear the retainer

I still do, years and years after getting the braces off.

Teeth have memory. Plus, it's a witch getting the retainer in when the teeth shift.


Braces are painful, but worth it in the end.

10. Well

I turn 19 in a week, but I had braces for 2 years in high school, and I can definitely feel your pain. It sucked not being able to eat popcorn and other good foods, and the only thing I can say to you is that the ends justify the means, definitely.
