Sean Penn wins, freepers go crazy?
How much do you wanna bet that freepers are just foaming at the mouth over the fact that an actor who dared to get involved in politics (never mind Ahnuld) won the oscar...

1. Not to mention Tim Robbins
Or the other guy who thanked his boyfriend (a public gay man, oh no!)

2. Tim Robbins won for best supporting actor
and he's been political too. And Errol Morris drew a comparison between the VietNam war and today's debacle, saying we were going down the same rabbit hole.

10. Sean Penn did
make a comment about WMDs but there was little politics tonight.

I am stoked LOTR took everything it was nominated for. I hated Titanic and that took everything. I feel vindicated!!!!!

40. Thats the great thing about opinions
everyone gets one. I for one believe LOTR to be one of the most woderful series of films every made. But at our awards party last night we had some that did not agree. Ain't life grand.

5. He didn't say anything...
and neither did Sean. IMHO, they did right in not saying anything.
They would have just provided more ammo to the reich-wingers
and what-not.

Way cool to see Sean win an Oscar. Its about time.

13. Sean did say a little something...
At the beginning of his speech, I'm quite sure I heard him say:

"One thing actors know for sure--besides the fact that there were no WMDs--is that there is no 'best' in acting..."

It was one of those blink-and-you'll-miss-it kind of things.

Anyway, a big Congratulations to Sean on his much deserved win!!

16. Sean penn did....
He said, "if there's one thing actors know, other than that there were no WMDs, it's that there is no 'best' in acting."

Major applause.

20. He spoke regarding his character in Mystic River
and how important and courageous it was to seek help if you were a vicitm of abuse, and how it perpetuates the cycle of violence. I didn't percieve a direct political hit, more of an emphasis on how all this hatred and violence needs to stop. Very subtle.

21. I was waiting for something about Bush or Iraq...
He didn't comment on those issues, but he did encourage victims of abuse to speak out. It had something to do with his character in Mystic River.

And how there is no shame in getting counseling and dealing with it, no matter at what time in your life.

37. He wore a peace button/said nothing political but something more important
He urged everyone being abused to get help to get out, that there is no shame in doing so. (His character was a victim/product of horrible abuse throughout childhood)

6. Yeah I missed Tim Robbins...
Errol Morris the one thing I thought was great was that this year, he gets cheers, when last year, Moore got booed.

I have to admit that I'm very pleased that Sean Penn won, as I think he's a fantatsic actor. A little surprised he showed up too.

WMD shuts em up real quick. I think they'll target Chrystal. He wasn't exactly complimentary towards Bush.

It was a great slam.

Hollywood will have sold us out by then, and all of the movies will look like they were written by Jerry Falwell and Ralph Reed.

25. Sean Penn, Tim Robbins, and Charlize Therron getting their
ocars absolutely made my night!I adore Sean and was thrilled that he showed up. Tim has had so may outstanding performances and his time was due, and Charlize simply gave the best performance in the history of cinema (imho). The only thing I was disappointed in was "IN American" not getting any awards. I thought it was one of the best films of gthe year. All in all, a great night (I'm qualifying this with the fact that I'm not a LOTR type of person but I knew they'd sweep so I wasn't disappointed. A good night for the oscars. I'M SO GLAD SEAN WON! He's SUCH A HERO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

26. I forgot to mention Matthew Perry,,,,
He had a quick interview and he mentioned that he was totally jazzed that Penn run(eventhough he loved Bill Murray and wished that it could have beeb a tie). This leads me to believe that he's a Sean Penn fan. Anyone that's a Sean Penn fan ia okay with me.

27. He also got a standing ovation. He does have an impressive body of work..
but I feel certain that the S.O. he received from his peers was for more than that. Sean's made two trips to Bhagdad, and has dared to report back consistently on his findings; he has put his career on the line.

IMO, that suatained applause was very pointed.

32. The thing about Sean Penn
is that he's consistently chosen good films--it truly is about the work for him and not the paycheck. He's never gone the blockbuster route like Nicolas Cage has done--for that alone, he deserved the Oscar!

You are absolutely correct. I read and interview with him and he's extremely selective about what he chooses. It's totally about the art for him - in other words, he's truly not a sell out - GOD I LOVE THIS MAN.

39. I think they were playing down the policial issues
So as not to give George and Co grist for the mill. Nother the right enjoys more than grinding the teeth at librul Hollywood. There were 7-8 comments against Bushco War inc (we had a party and someone counted). They were mostly minor jabs. Looks like Hollywood got their act together and is not going to be the distraction George so deperately needs.
