I don't know what it is about it. The word itself implies you are viewing something extraordinary. Now it's used to praise performance slightly above mediocre.

completely agree there. Some comedian even does a good bit on that. Or someone ranted about it in a humorous way. Either way... yes.

5. "First Off"
There's absolutely no need for the word 'off.' It can be left out entirely with no ill effect. Better still, leave the whole phrase off and just say what you're going to say. What truly rankles is that it's used almost exclusively to signal that what follows will be a pissy little rant.

31. "my bad"-- It's always said like a challenge--
Like when someone inattentively rolls over your foot with a shopping cart and 'my bad!" follows.

Not "are you OK?" or even "oops!" just a hunk of don't give a shit about the consequences "yep I did it now out of my face"

What gripes me is somehow it makes being totally selfish and irresponsible OK. Like the proffered apology is assumed to be already understood to be accepted. Just the breezy attitude.

33. "No Problem"
Me: "Thank you for quickly helping me with that" (courtesy--expect a "you're welcome" or some such)
Them: "No problem!"
Me: "You mean there could have been a problem? I thought it was your job to help. I don't mean to impose-- should I have asked someone else?"
Them: (sensing a new problem) "No, I'm stationed here to help."
Me: "well, thanks again. Bye!
Them: (more cheerfully)"No problem!"
Me:"There could have been a problem?"

OK OK fossil here. "No Problem" in place of "you're welcome" just irks me and is lazy.

No Problem means Piece of Cake as in a crafty lie put out to fool someone being aided that no, the helper did NOT have to go out of their way to help. Like when your in-law asks for a little help getting a tree out of the garden after a storm and it takes you all afternoon and two chainsaw blades. "Oh thank you so much. I hope it wasn't too much trouble" answered with "piece o'cake" or "no problem".

But a service industry worker trotting out a "no problem" just for doing their job is just surly.

35. Any sports metaphor, "let's rock and roll", and "You know what I'm sayin'?" or any variant thereof
such as "You know what I mean" or "I'm just sayin'" or "Just let me tell ya" and so forth.

Pure ignorance - the only time someone says "Know what I'm saying" is when they are too goddamned dumb to actually put into human language what they are, in fact, trying to say.

Language should loosen up. Slang is democracy, proper grammar is fascism. Slang is Obama, proper grammar is McCain. Move forward. Make the rules adjust to the reality, don't stifle growth by adhering to the rules. Revolution starts with language.

Although I do hate the yuppie lingo. Apropos, utilize, paradigm, situ, instead of appropirate, use, situation, etc.

55. "I'd hit that."
Nauseating, demeaning, objectifying expression directed primarily at women. It's disgusting on so many levels. The guy saying it is assessing the fuckability of the woman in question, and the use of the word "that" objectifies and completely dehumanizes her. She becomes an object to be assessed -- essentially a vagina on legs.

I suppose it does get used in other ways, but I've always heard it being say by a man, speaking about a woman.

I suppose it could be objectifying a man, too. Substitute "dick on legs" -- or whatever your favorite orifice is. ;)
