2. I've been scared to do that.
I have a couple of old lamps with bad cords.

4. Go to an electric supply store....
Buy a replacement plug. The plug comes in two pieces, that when snapped together, look like a one piece unit.

I'm going from memory here, but if you ask the person at the store, they will tell you exactly how to do it.

A lamp cord has a groove running down the center. This groove separates the 2 wires that are hidden under the insulation. One of the wires is neutral, and one is hot. If your eyes are good, you will see a small groove running down one SIDE of the cord insulation. This grooved side represents the neutral wire.

Cut the old plug off the cord squarely. You do not have to strip the cord.

Get the part of the new plug that has the prongs on it. You lay the lamp cord inside of this part of the plug. It has to go in a certain way...with the neutral or grooved edge going in a certain direction. Ask at the store which side the neutral wire goes on. Inside of the new plug, there are sharp prongs that pierce the cord when you slip on the second part, which is a cover. This is why there is no need to strip the cord...the prongs pierce right through the cord insulation to make the connection, and the plug "cover" holds it all in place.

6. In addition, if you have to replace the whole cord....
buy a new lamp cord with the plug already attached. Make note of the neutral side of the cord per my above post.

Long story short....fish the new cord through all the lamp nuts and hardware until you get to the switch. Separate and strip about an inch of both wires. Neutral goes to the silver screw, other wire goes to the brass screw on the switch.

14. I feel for you, my pupski still does the same thing
I can't tell you how many wires she's chewed destroying mice, keyboards, lamps, vacuum cleaners. Bitter apple rubbed on the cords does seem to help.

And replacing the cord yourself is easy -- I know this because I was capable of doing it several times w/o burning down the house. Plus you'll feel like Wonder Woman when you're done!

Probably keeping an eye out to make sure none of your elderly neighbors boosted my car.

:bounce:

Not to point the finger too much at your kid, but did he chew a hole in the slipcover and eat all the milk bones too?

13. google search - antique lighting fixtures/supplies... etc.
Unless it's a signed Tiffany - you should be able to find a plethora of suppliers. If it was a signed Tiffany, it'll lose value but you can still get replacement parts - but you should only do so upon professional advice.

What was your puppy thinking? : ) Oh right. Puppies and thinking... impulse and play are far more important in their little fuzzy heads. He didn't have a Kong or a ball or something to gnaw on? I've ruined too many antiques to tell you what to do * right *... all I can say is, I know the pain. Dayum...

If it's an authentic anything - have it looked at by someone who knows what they're doing. DON'T just do "whatever" or get something from Home Depot. Really. If you know it's history and that history needs preserving.

19. She had a toy
but it got ruined earlier today by the other one.

And in the interests of full disclosure, the couch was ruined by Bailey too, hence the slipcover.

We are no strangers to puppies in this house.

20. my dog has toys too, but his "baby" is my daughter's stuffed orca...
but as yet he hasn't ripped it.

I don't know the concept of having a normal couch (or furniture)... my dog is a shedding machine, and I think if I had a chest x-ray the only thing they'd see would be lab fuzz. There is no rational way any animal could shed more than his own body weight (74 lbs) but that's what it seems like!

I was just trying to help in case you had something you needed to preserve... I'd rather have a dog than fine things (but that doesn't mean I don't appreciate fine things - I just do it from afar).

My boy (an old lab mix) was saved from the e-list and he either has diabetes or a psychogenic disorder. Either way, his odd peeing is not my favorite thing about him and we're working on it. Were it not for this issue, he'd be perfect other than having less time with me because of his age. Since I'm not perfect I can't complain. He talks in his sleep (literally), but that's just cute.

I give you a lot of credit for having a puppy - they are as big a commitment as young (human) children and just the idea of having a puppy is exhausting to me : ). Labs, even Lab mixes - as well as other breeds/mixes - are puppies until they're about 6 years old... (so my dog is at least 8). You have a lot more energy and patience than I do - good for you!

I hope your puppy is okay - from your post I was concentrating on the lamp because I figured there wasn't a health issue - I'm guessing she didn't eat the whole fixture... I hope, anyway.

My dog could care less about toys - but he loves his orca... it's kind of cute since he's black and white, too, and he thinks he's a Chihuahua, because he thinks he's a lap dog... No, I'm not kidding... he thinks he should be in someone's arms or lap at ALL times. No exceptions. Oddly, he cowers as if he was hit at some point - which is sickening. I find it curious that he is so trusting. He's a person magnet. He likes dogs and cats, too, so it's a mystery.

I'm trying to teach him about "fetching" and that sort of thing but nothing matters to him except food, belly rubs, more belly rubs... and food. Did I mention food? He's an old man... I love him. No, I don't feed him just because he looks sweet. Puppy-dog eyes don't sway me - ever. I care too much about him.

Have fun with your pups... : )
