Why did I get a puppy?
I just gave Maddy a 10 minute time out.

She was running back and forth between the living room and the back yard, alternating between chewing on the rug and chewing on, well, everything she could find in the yard.

I thought she might need a puppy time out.

Now she's in the sky kennel screaming her head off. :banghead:

20. Dogs do not "suck".
I would not want to live life without the company of a few dogs. I have six right now & would adopt more if I weren't afraid to be labeled a "hoarder".

I also have two beautiful Tabby cats who have stolen my heart. I wouldn't want to live without them either.

Edited on Tue Dec-02-08 10:23 PM by XemaSab
I won't give up on her.

Oh, wait, Bailey already did all that back when HE was a puppy! :banghead:

Last week Maddy chewed up the slipcover for the couch. Three guesses why the couch is slipcovered? :banghead::banghead::banghead:

Even worse: that was couch #2. :banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead:

40. Glad to hear it, XemaSab.
Sounds like your dogs are furniture-averse. I was looking for something to read the other day and I dug out a book that I read about 30 years ago. The cover was torn and there were puppy teeth marks on it. I suddenly missed my dog, even though he chewed up half my albums at one time.

3. dogs don't understand a 10 minute time out
:pals:

A spray bottle is your friend. When she does something you don't like - spray her. Oh, and don't let her out of your sight for a couple of days. Keep her attached to you and whenever she starts to do something you don't want - pow - spray gun. I used to say "pow pow" at the dogs as a I sprayed. Once they got older, I just had to say "pow pow" and they stopped and ran....

Good luck!

she was the "first dog" and so I experimented on her all the time. The "pow pow" was the best! I would just look at her and say "Where's the pow pow" and she would tuck her tail between her legs and give me that beagle-y look....

28. We had a super soaker
We used to cock it to pump it up and spray the cats when they were doing something they weren't suppose to. The final years that my ex lived with me, we didn't even keep water in the soaker. (It leaked terrible) all we had to do was pick up the dry soaker and start cocking it and the cats would scatter.

I could unload a whole spray bottle in her face and she'd just stand there blinking.

Meanwhile, I just need to pretend to pick up the spray bottle with Mick and he'll sulk away.

the knee in the face works, and taking their back feet out with your foot works.
but dogs do not jump up or put their feet on an effective pack leader. mine used to do that stuff, but cesar showed me the way.

14. Someone walked into the shop today with a Teacup Chihuahua
puppy. Just got him yesterday from his momma. He was so tiny when I first saw him I thought he was a RAT!! He was already trained to follow the owner everywhere he goes! So cute. Now, if I can't have a Border Collie, I would want one of these!! At least I can put him in a carrier and bring him on the bus and the train when I travel! I hear they are good watch dogs too, alerting you when someone is around.

42. I have a Chihuahua, but I will never have another one.
She is 9 months old and a total terror. I have had her since she was 6 weeks old. She was so totally uncontrollable that I sent her to Man's Best Friend for 2 weeks in puppy boot camp. She came back worse than ever. I think they mistakenly trained her to be an attack dog. She growls and snaps at all strangers. But you are right, she is a good watch dog. She alerts me when even my Rottweiler doesn't bark. But the problem is she barks at anything that moves outside.

16. try not to make her crate a place of "punishment"
or it will never be the useful tool it can be

better to stop the bad behavior instantly (by whatever your choice of method - just be firm and consistent), and then distract with something appropriate

19. Yes, if you can get her to think of the crate as home, you're ahead of the game.
We got a former foster dog a few years ago, and he was of course used to crating, and being hauled around to adoption fairs.

He had terrible separation anxiety when we first got him, tore a lot of stuff up when we weren't there.

Our vet said that there were anti-anxiety medicines for dogs, but that they didn't work in 50% of the cases, and that she'd recommend getting a crate.

Well, it was home to him and what he'd been missing, apparently. We kept him in it when we weren't home (and he often got in it when we were) for about a year, and then were able to wean him off of it. (Because we were sick of it taking up half the family room! - and we still had to put his cushion where it used to be.)

they started crating her and giving her a cookie every time they left. It eventually got to the point where they didn't have to crate her anymore as long as they gave her a cookie before going to work. If they forgot the cookie, look out!! You are coming home to a mess. Dogs are so funny!!

25. The problem with the "appropriate" distraction:
Edited on Tue Dec-02-08 10:28 PM by XemaSab
We have two other dogs, so if one of them gets a cookie, they ALL have to have cookies. If one of them gets a rawhide chew thing, they ALL have to have rawhide chew things. And, worst of all, two of them don't care about toys unless ONE of them has a toy.

Maddy's toy got torn apart yesterday. NOT by Maddy. :eyes:

...and then it's like you turn off a light switch, they go from holy terrors to serene adults almost overnight. You have to get through those 2 years, though. In my case, as soon as I had the last ones settled down, the next set of puppies would come along - so, never a moment's peace!

I can't stand the noise Ollie makes in puppy jail. The crate was supposed to be a place to contain him but I didn't have the heart... so I only put him in there when he's bad, which isn't too often. We're into major chewing but I give him tons of rawhides and stuffed animals to kill.

If you cannot afford or cannot find a trainer, get a book about dog training.

There are also videos that can be helpful. The hard part is usually getting the dog to understand what it is that you want them to do. They are usually eager to please once they know what you want.

that I've never been able to train out of a puppy. They all seem to grow out of it, but they can sure inflict some damage before they do. Some of my gardening tools still bear the results of Sapphire's puppy teeth. She quit her indiscriminate chewing after she lost her milk teeth and grew her adult teeth.
