With a five-month-old daughter at home, Jamie Lynn Spears should be celebrating motherhood. Instead, the former TV star is fearful that controversial plastic surgery she had while pregnant could have caused long-term harm to baby Maddie.

In the Dec. 15 issue of Star — on sale now — we report that Jamie Lynn had just finished her hit Nickelodeon show Zoey 101 when she found the weight piling on. Not realizing she was expecting, she pleaded with her mom, Lynne Spears, to let her get liposuction, says a source.

"She didn't know she was pregnant when she filled out the health questionnaire prior to the procedure," a second source reveals. "Her mom approved the injections and went through tons of red tape to get the clinic to administer them to an underage patient."

Moms-to-be are advised against the procedure.

"Any form of liposuction is dangerous and should not be performed on a pregnant woman," plastic surgeon Dr. Gary Burton tells Star. "It poses serious health risks to the fetus."

The very first thing I would have done is a UcG pregnancy test. First rule of thumb: All women of child-bearing age are pregnant until proven otherwise. The surgeon was an idiot. Being hired by a family of idiots is no excuse.

No, we are not just baby machines and shouldn't be treated as such. Should drugstores require pregnancy tests before a woman buys over the counter meds? Should bartenders ask to see proof of non-pregnancy before serving a woman? If a woman buys a pack of cigarettes should the clerk refuse to sell it to her if she doesn't have the results of that day's pregnancy test? Should a dental assistant only x-ray your teeth after proof that a woman isn't pregnant?

I realize that some medical procedures require such tests, but it's this sort of assumption that makes me crazy. :banghead:

9. Hospitals HAVE to make the assumption that a post-pubescent woman MIGHT be pregnant.

And it's not because they view us as baby-making machines. Concerns about doing surgery on a pregnant woman are far, far different than concerns over taking OTC meds (just ask an anesthesiologist). It's a must before surgery, and really has nothing to do with societal views.

To protect both ourselves and our clients. The one time I was nearly sued for malpractice was when a woman swore she was not sexually active before I prescribed an antibiotic (tetracycline) that is best avoided during pregnancy. Fortunately, I not only documented her denial, but ran a pregnancy test anyway, which was negative.

Guess what? She was very early in a pregnancy, too early for the test to be positive (we didn't have the really sensitive tests back then) and subsequently miscarried. Despite the fact that tetracycline does not cause miscarriages - though it can cause bone or teeth defects in the fetus - she decided to sue me. Fortunately, when her lawyer reviewed the chart and saw the words "Patient denies intercourse for over a year. UCG=neg", he realized she didn't have a case, and the matter was dropped.

So yeah, that surgeon was negligent. Teenagers lie about sex and birth control? Who'd a thunk it!

20. Okay, whoa, kiva! I was talking from a medical standpoint.

Like it or not, medical training dictates that that is how we treat a patient. And competence and thoroughness in medical care are a bit more important than selling drinks or cigarettes. Bearing that rule in mind is not paternalistic. It's realistic. You are not a baby-making machine, but as long as you're physically capable of conceiving a child, a good medical caregiver is going to bear certain safety tips in mind.

3. Dubious story.

First, if it involved injections, it wasn't liposuction--may possibly have been "lipodissolve," for which there is zero proof that it actually works. It's not a surgical procedure.

If she DID undergo a surgical procedure, it's SOP for female patients to do a pee-stick test immediately prior to surgery to confirm there's no pregnancy.

Doubtful story in a number of levels.

But here is the $64k question - did Jamie Lynn's mom know that her daughter was sexually active at the time?

Example:

My first roommate in college was a smoker even though I specifically requested a non-smoking roommate. I was really annoyed and asked the girl if she was a smoker then why did she fill out the roommate survey as a non-smoker (she had start smoking a year before she applied to college). Turns out the girl never told her mother than she smoked and her mom was watching her when she filled out the survery so she figured she'd put in non-smoker thinking that she'd get a roomie who wouldn't care (I did - my father died of lung cancer).

Point is, if JL's mom was around when she filled out the forms, she might not have thought twice of saying "NO" to being pregnant; whereas, perhaps if it was just JL and the doctor, JL might have commented that she was having sex and the doctor would have ordered a pregnancy test before doing the surgery.

So who knows who is to blame here but honestly, I wouldn't call JL a bad mother if this was done during the early stages of her pregnancy.

11. Dumb question, but wouldn't she have realized she was pregnant when she missed several periods?

I mean, she said she noticed that she was gaining weight. Doesn't noticeable weight gain start happening in the second trimester or so? And doesn't that mean that she had missed three or more "cycles" before thinking that she may be pregnant?

I don't know what's more stupid. A girl that can go months without thinking that missing several periods is a sign that something has changed with her body, or a mother that gives medical consent for her 16-year-old daughter to have liposuction.

Just when I think that family cannot be more fucked up...

16. My periods were very irregular until I went on the pill at 18.

It wasn't unusual for me to skip 3,4,5 months. Stress, excessive exercise, bad diet, anorexia, or just heredity can all be a factor.

So, on that note, if she wasn't regular before, she may not have noticed anything amiss.

I hadn't previously considered the factors that you mentioned. I suppose without knowing what her cycles were like pre-pregnancy, it would be impossible to make the assumptions that I did. Thanks for the clarification. :hi:

What woman of that age needs liposuction? If you're 16 and you think you need it, I give you two options: 1. if you look like that photo and you think you need liposuction, see a shrink. 2. If you're a chunky girl and you think liposuction is the answer, get help NOW - EARLY - before it's too late!! - to change your diet & exercise habits.

Of course, those two options exclude the possibility of sensible and loving parents.
